Sigh. It's gotten worse.

Kinja'd!!!

This trim is literally about to fall off the car. It’s barely hanging on. I don’t know what or who broke it.

The dealer was originally only ordering the right side since it was loose, but I called the advisor back and he’s ordering this side too, or so he said. Either way, I have to check the car each time I get somewhere to see if this has blown off yet.

Annoying. On the plus side, I guess, I did figure out that I’m not the only one with this problem. About 10 or so other owners in the Mazda6 group I’m in on Facebook have had or are having this issue as well.

Apparently, the trim is only held on by one clip and that clip holds it tight (in theory). Over time, the clip breaks or works itself loose. If this was an older car, I’d slap some 3M tape behind it and call it a day. But, I want it fixed right since the damn thing is a 2016 that I still owe 14k on.

The best solution is a replacement + 3M tape especially if this is a recurring issue. It could be weather related, are the clips actually broken when they remove the trim?

Maybe throw some masking tape on them to hold them more securely in the meantime?

You don’t use them to leverage the trunk open, do you? Just curious because although that body style Mazda6 was out for awhile before I left Mazda, we never had any issues with those trim parts, except for body shops ordering them for rear-ended cars.

Our entire Odyssey was built with double-sided tape, so I feel you. There are so many loose trim pieces, it’s no longer worth telling the dealer because they just fix it to OE spec...which itself is a design flaw, so the cycle repeats.

I may have once or twice but mostly I use the little handle to shut the trunk. It has a built in one in the trunklid kind of like our CX-5 does.

I’d go the 3M route. Make sure to totally clean both the trim and paint behind it before applying the 3M, to ensure proper adhesion. I’d clean with soap and water, followed by Isopropyl alcohol to get everything squeaky clean. After putting on the 3M, I would tape the trim down with blue painters tape and let it sit for 8 hours to ensure a tight bond.

Opening as well? Or does the trunk pop open all the way, I don’t recall.

Once the car is out of warranty, I’ll try that if it breaks again. But for now, I just want the dealer to fix it right.

They’re ordering the parts. It’s just a giant pain in the ass since the dealer is 40 miles away.

I may have done that opening it before. I usually just grab the trunklid itself as the mass of fingerprints on it shows.

Sounds like your 6 is a lot like either of my smarts. The blue one saw a TON of stupid little things break during warranty. We’re talking the volume knob to the radio, doors that close so tight they scratch their own paint, a failed serpentine belt, even side skirts that fall off.

The new one isn’t off to that great of a start either. *Sigh* Hope your dealer makes it right!!

So far they’re good and on my side about it, thankfully. They ordered both sides’ trim and new clips, too. I take it in after work job Tuesday to have them do the work on Wednesday and they’re giving me a rental to drive in the meantime.

What’s funny is the things that have happened with my car (upholstery issue on driver’s seat and trim on trunk) wouldn’t be noticed by regular people. But I have OCD, so I notice everything! (Diagnosed OCD, too - not the type everyone says they have when they really don’t.)
