Is there any logic to AMD's old numbering scheme?

I’ve recently transplanted the guts of my old 2011-vintage gaming rig into a much smaller case. I wasn’t using it much and it was taking up space, so I figured that a smaller case would make it easier to move around. Everything almost fits, with one of the optical drives sticking out a few mm because the back hits the edge of the MB - yeah, it’s a bit tight.

Kinja'd!!!

There were some minor issues with getting the various drives connected to the right ports (the IDE stuff, not the SATA), master and slave and all that crap. I changed a few cards whilst updating it, but something went weird when I popped the video card in, with the machine getting warm and that all too familiar burning electrical smell. The magic smoke had been released from the ol’ 9800GT (one of two that used to be installed, with the other moved to a different computer).

I was looking to get a cheap-ish card to replace the 9800, but for the life of me I can’t figure out AMD’s old numbering scheme. Is a 7570 better than a 6450? One would think so, but the stats sites don’t seem to be giving me a consistent answer as to which card is better than the next. It seems that a GT 730 would be a good replacement for the 9800 GT, but I don’t exactly want to spend that much (yeah, I know it’s not really that much...) So, what would be a suitable replacement for my old video card? I have better a better machine for current gaming, so this thing is more for the older stuff. All I want is to find a cost-effective replacement that is at least as good as what I had. There’s a ton of various Radeon HD models out there - which one do I go for?

Man... I’ve been dealing with a ton of BSOD crashes on my old (2011) desktop, all seemingly Radeon-related. Probably driver-induced. Win10 really fucked with it.

No advice... sorry. Mostly commenting to commiserate and bookmark.

How big is your budget? You could always grab nvidia’s gt 710 for $40 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DOFD0G8/ref=psdc_284822_t1_B01AZ7M2OY

I’m trying to keep it at $50 or less. I’m not sure if I should get a older, formerly high-end card, or a newer lower-end unit.

In theory the 7570 should be better than the 6450. The real problem you are likely to run into that there’s no reason to review either of these cards. They are both pretty weak, especially the 6450, so there’s not much interest in them. FWIW, Futuremark has the 7570 well ahead: https://www.futuremark.com/hardware/gpu?_ga=2.36270952.999088246.1496288349-764456084.1496288286

In any event, at that level, you may as well just use processor graphics if you have them. These entry-level cards aren’t good for much other than getting something on the screen, and the old ones will just do that while wasting power.

In any event, what you should get is a GTX 1050, but at $100, that’s twice what you want to spend.

Failing that, pickup this RX460 for $70: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202269 , that will give you a modern card that’s actually somewhat capable, though a bit RAM deprived.

Edit: I guess this 1050 is only $80, so might be an ok reach: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814137058

Think of it like BMW’s weird transition from when numbers mattered.

AMD used to have a sensible scheme where 6000 and 7000 series shared the same architecture, with 7300 and 7400 being different hardware, and 7810 and 7850 being different clock rates / voltages / drivers.

Then they started introducing “R6/7/8" schemes on the same hardware and messed everything up, like when BMW started making gran coupes.

So now they have the HD #### series, the R# ###x series and the RX#### series, with each having their own numbering sequence and each one being a newer series than the previous.

Also, when comparing power of cards, use passmark. http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/

If you want to play modern games, you need something higher than a 7850 generally. So aim for a passmark score of 4500+. RX460 is probably the best card in your budget.

I would also suggest saving up for a $100-130 card instead of trying to find a $50 card, that way you can keep playing new games for the next 3-4 years. An RX460 is going to struggle to play anything released 2016+ but will play older games just find.

Also, expect driver difficulty and lack of support with an older AMD card. New games might not work out of the box and you might end up having to wait for drivers months after release to play.

If you want to play new games, Iwould suggest you save up for a Geoforce 1050 ti. It’s more expensive up front, but will keep you current and last you longer without having to upgrade just to play new games. It’s newer, will have better support, and have future proofing compared to an RX460.

Radeon dropped support for it’s semi-old cards in Win 10. I have a dual setup that worked just fine. If you do some searching you can find some ideas on how to make them work fine again. I finally got mine going by using an older driver, because I didn’t want to spend any $ on it just yet.

I’ve got one kicking around that I have zero use for

$50?? Well usually $80 can get you “something” now according to that gizmodo article on a new video card that was just released. (im trying to find the link)

If you do have to get one in that range just make sure there are drivers (new ones) and software that also can be updated.

Thanks for the offer. It’s probably better than the 2GB GT520 I remembered pulling out of my HP, but I just found a better deal. Micro Center had a returned 4GB for $43, and on top of that there is a $15 rebate. $28 for a card better than I expected to find at this price? OK, you’ve twisted my arm...

4gb GT 730, that is.

In SoCal there is only one Micro Center store. When I wasn’t driving I would spend 5 hours on buses each way to shop there - it was worth it.

Once, when visiting my folks it was determined stha t mom’s computer needed a new power supply. Dad didn’t want to drive the 15 miles to micro Center but just wanted to pick one up at Best Buy near their house. He freaked when he saw the $79 price. That convinced him, and we drove to MC and hot essentially the same thing for $16. Worth it...

I’m not sure how useful 4gb on a card the low powered will be. I tend to prioritize memory speed over quantity on a video card.

I think my 430 is a 2gb ddr3 with kind of a narrow bus. It never used more than a gig and it would be struggling to keep the frame rate usable.

Idk what you’re doing with this card. About the most intense mine did was skyrim with high settings but at 720p. Ran fine doing that.

The computer isn’t going to be used for much. It’s my old gaming rig circa 2011, so I’d I even use it for games it will be for old ones. I have an i7 for more intense things. If need be I could pull the spare 9800GT out of another machine, but it’s not all that important.
