Kinja'd!!!

I’ve bought and sold dozens of cars and never dealt with Odo tampering. Now, several weeks ago I was looking at a Tundra with 120k miles. Carfax showed last registered ODO as 200+. Now this titan. NICB was clean, no accident or theft reported. Googling the VIN shows it was run through a COPart auction last fall with 200,000 miles, now showing 152k.

What are the odds of finding TWO odo tampered trucks in three weeks?

so far I put a deposit down, but haven’t completed the deal. I’m tempted to do it anyways...

I once bought a car that was clocked, it was a total dog and I don’t recommend it. They’ve usually been mistreated in other ways.

Honestly, the odometer inconsistency is far from the only reason I wouldn’t buy this truck.

That’s your cue to leave. Get your $$$ back and GTFO.

If somebody at some point in the vehicle’s life was willing to take on the massive legal risk of fudging the odometer #s, there’s no telling what else they were willing to do to the vehicle.

Don’t do it.

A quick Google search brings up odometer failure as a recurring issue on Tundras. One of the first search results claims to have gotten stuck as early as 32k!

I guess it’s possible that a repair was made, but if so, there should be a notation/disclaimer about it. Even if it changed hands after the repair, each new owner should be keeping track of that.

The fact that it went through copart is a bigger red flag than the Odo tampering.

I’d run like hell. If ODO has been tampered with, there’s an outside chance title status has been washed. Does the COPART record show if it was clear title at time of auction? We used to have some issues with multi-state title washing on rebuilt vehicles in this area. I worked at a salvage yard that sold repairables for five years, guys used to buy and fix, then title the vehicle in a couple different states, and the “branded salvage/rebuilt” tag would get lost along the way, and sold at an inflated price to an unwitting buyer.

Walk. This isn’t a one of a kind rarity. It’d need to be mechanically perfect and insanely cheap to warrant a deal.

Don’t under any circumstances go through with that.

I’d be concerned with buying anything that had been auctioned through COPart and not a traditional auto auction. Nice cars don’t go through COPart. Odo tampering is just one of many sketchy things done to that truck I’d imagine.

Sorry that this came up after you put the deposit down, but as others have said there are multiple red flags here. I’d walk away from this one. Pro-4X’s aren’t common but I’ll bet one pops up for a little higher price that isn’t as sketchy.

Sure it was tampered?

Reason why I ask: Digital dashes in many 80s Ford’s have 6 digits to the right of the decimal point. Once they hit 199999.9 they flip back to 100000.0 and will continue this. The first digit will never read more than 1.

it probably not tampering, more like the old cluster failed and someone found another one on ebay and bolt it back on

if someone were to roll it back they’d probably roll it back to 52k miles instead of 152k
