What’s your gas cap like? Mine has a holder for the inner cap, and the plumbing is super sayian spec. It’s opened with a button on driver’s door. The profile is also a weird shape thanks to the body panel it’s attached to:

My wife’s Jeep has no cap, door is remote release. The Tacoma has the tradition cap hanging from a little cord when you remove it, no remote release, no lock. The Cougar is behind the license plate, locking cap.

My Camry beater has a plastic fuel door with a broken latch, so it’s held closed solely by hinge friction and aerodynamics and the fuel release lever in the cabin does nothing, but it has a lip from which I can hang the untethered fuel cap. Other than its age-induced brokenness, it’s not dissimilar to the setups on my Miata and the wife’s 3, certainly nothing like the cap-less fuel filler necks on current Ford models.

My Miata has a door release inside the center console armrest, next to the trunk release. No storage clip or leash for the gas cap.
My Civic has a broken floor mounted trunk/gas cap release, so the only way to do it is to open the trunk with the key (no remote), reach inside the wall of the trunk, and manually release the gas cap lid. It does have a storage clip for the cap, but no leash.

I wouldn’t really know since I very rarely ever open my gas tank on my own. Being in NJ, that is a foreign area I am not allowed to touch lol.

The Twingo has a very boring cap, which is locked by the key. It does have this handy hook to hang the cap on the fuel door(which also has a hook):

The Camry has an interior pull for the gas door and the gas cap’s stupid plastic retaining pin keeps popping out of its hole on the gas door. I gave up somewhere around the 50k mile and left it disconnected. It’s also bloody filthy after getting swallowed up in April’s sandstorm.
No interior pull for the Miata. Just walk up and push the filler door. Similar concept except the cap stays pinned to the filler door and it’s not caked with dust. 30+ mpg in the city means I don’t open it very often.

Simple gas cap on a rubber tether so it hangs off the fuel door. This one is a replacement since both the tether and the gasket on the original rotted away.
The fuel door itself works lever style, you push on the front, which pops out the back, there’s no pull or release for it. It is tied with the central locking, so can’t be opened when the car is locked.

Mine is the usual round gas door. Located on the left (drivers’) side of
the car with a pull handle on the interior to the left of the drivers’
door (excuse the dirt - haven’t had a chance to give the car a good clean since winter!). There’s a slot to hang the gas cap while fueling up, but it also has a tether as well!

Yeah, I was a bit apprehensive about it when I first got it, since I liked the more robust fuel door mount my previous car had, but because the tether mounts to the fuel door, it hands far enough out that I’ve never had an issue with it touching the car.

Probably. My goal is to invest as little as possible in that Civic. It was flooded during Hurricane Matthew last year when I lived in NC. The insurance company totaled the car and gave me the choice of giving them the car and getting $3800, or keeping the car and getting $3400. I kept it, gutted the interior and got rid of the mildew. It really didn’t take much damage, but the cable on the floor deteriorated and then it snapped over the winter when it got really cold and I tried to pop the trunk. (I should probably just do an Oppo post about my flood-mobile at this point).

Well since there isn’t a place in the lid for it I am happy there is not tether cause I don’t want it hanging against my car. So as I was taught with older cars to take it out and place it on the top of the pump. The thought there is incase you forget to put it back on you won’t lose it in the road like you would if you place it on your roof and 2 it isn’t placed on your precious paint.

Maybe I’ll write it up this weekend. The point is, when something breaks I just shrug and say “hey, $400 car.” I’ve probably put 5,000 miles on it since then, so I feel like I got my money’s worth out of it. I’ve had it for over 5 years now, after buying it off of my sister.

Yeah its really quite inconvenient honestly. It’s generally so much faster to just do it yourself. But they tend to yell at you if you do that here. I have lived out of state for a bit and it was just so much nicer. Coming home was rough readjusting to such a pointless rule.
