ugh. I wonder if changing to multi-layer steel head gaskets would solve that engine’s problems for good. Those graphite-fiber gaskets suck.

I think the problem is the studs GM used. There’s a company called Northstar Performance that designed a new stud design who’ll install them for you.

You sir are correct sorta?! That stud kit really works. The issue is the block is so soft that the threads strip on the head bolts holes. There are standard and oversize thread inserts that can be installed but sometimes that doesn’t even work. The installing of studs to replace the bolts is the answer. The solution is tapping the block holes even deeper and larger to install the studs. Its labor intensive but the only real fix. GM even stopped selling reman engines themselves years ago. I suspect because so many of the blocks were junk and they didn’t want to give approval to the stud repair method that someone else patented before them. Having worked in a GM shop I’ve seen hundreds of the blocks repaired the approved GM way with thread inserts. Two friends shops have done the stud kit, its awesome.
