I always take that as a slight, like “ Hey, I know you ’ ll ignore my email, so here ’ s a phone call! ”
They’re usually right about that first part.

I see you have met my dad. Holy shit I want to reach through the phone and slap him sometimes. “Yeah, I’m just calling to see if you got the text about the email I just sent that is a scan of the fax I sent earlier.” I wish I was joking about that quote, but it happens way too often from him. Don’t get involved in a family business. Just don’t, it’s not worth it.

Oh, they were definitely right about the first part. Maybe I can get them to quit calling me by answering their call with “thanks for calling me and bringing this to my attention. I will be sure to immediately delete that marketing email you just wasted your time sending me.”

For many years, my outgoing voicemail was “for a quicker response, please email me at....” and I was dead serious. I need stuff in writing. Phone calls get to the point where they’re almost sketchy, like people trying to get away with saying stuff and then denying it later.

As horrifying as this sounds, I think this was for one brief moment in business culture considered basic business CYA and professional procedure. Not so much now, maybe. It happens to me routinely at work, and back when I was job-hunting the advice was always to follow up emails of resumes/etc. with a call. The idea, I think, is that the email is a written document of what has been sent/etc. (the CYA part) and the phone call is a chance to clarify any confusing issues and make sure it’s received and has been read in a close timeframe (the “professional” part).
So yes, it sucks, but it’s a practice which was actually encouraged at one point.

I had a boss whom I’d email...and then get an instant message or text asking if I emailed him.
He would then open the email I sent from yesterday or click on the link and then open the file folder sent yesterday and then complain about how little work I did.

I can understand that. In my case I’ll get an email that says I need these parts for this job by this date. Then they come up to me and say I sent you an email. I think it’s just because they don’t check their emails as much as me.

It depends, I guess. I have multiple e-mail accounts and only one gets checked regularly. The others get checked infrequently, or not at all (spam).

So much this. I hate not having things in writing. Verbal PO’s are the worst. I don’t need a PO number from you, I just want everything in writing so that I know how much you’re ordering and where it is shipping to. I want it in writing, and in email so that I can refer to it later instead of hoping I don’t misplace the chicken scratch I wrote down talking to you over the phone.

I realize that sometimes an email does need a follow up. I take issue with people who call me within 5 minutes of sending an email, and with people who insist on following up on an email that contains no actionable material in it. If the email doesn’t contain a question that you need me to answer or a task you need me to do, don’t send it, and if you do waste our time by sending it, don’t follow up on it by calling me two minutes later.
