Kinja'd!!!

Came home to find this. My valve stem is leaking like a son of a gun. It’s past 630 and every shop is closed. I don’t have a tire puller. Is there any way to repair the valve stem without removing the tire? Videos I’m finding all show the new stem being pulled through the back...

How long will it hold air? If you pump it up could you even drive it to a gas station?

A big pile of glue all around the valve should do it, at least temporarily for you to go through the day...

Little bit of JB Weld on the leak of the stem, should get you to the fire shop.

I realize that fire is always an optional and sometimes likely outcome, but what will that do in this situation?

With high-sidewall tires like that I’ve been able to take the wheel off the car, let out all of the air (take the core out of the valve stem), then use a pry bar to de-beat the tire. Push down on the bead until you can see the back side of the valve stem to make sure you can get the new one in. Cut out the old stem, pull the new one through the hole, then re-seat the bead using whatever shadetree method you fancy.

do you have a new valve stem to put in? if you do, then just put on a spare for a sec, and put a board on the front side of the tire( the one with the issue)(near the valve stem), to make sort of a ramp. then drive up on it. it will fall off the bead real quick. then you can get to the stem. cut off the foot of the old stem, and pull it out, soap up the new one, and pull it in.

easy peasy.......

Does the longbed not have a spare you can put on it for now? Are Tercel wheels a different size?

It’s leaking pretty pretty pretty badly.

I’d take it off and leave it at Lester Schwab’s tire shop tomorrow.

Tire lighting fixture for your consideration.

Ha, didn’t even notice that. Ultimately fire is the solution to everything, so I stand by it.

This is too much effort. I’d get half way through and still end up taking it to a tire shop.

No easy way to fix that without removing the tire I’m afraid.

Serious question though- do you not have a spare tire?

I think you’re best bet is to remove the wheel and take it to a shop to get a new air valve.

I am actually thinking if ordering some I these. I know it doesn’t help you now, but I need some too.

Do the board on the tire trick to pop the bead off the lip of the rim. Then you should be able to get at the valve.

Jack up the car, put on the spare, throw the flat in the back and take it to a tire shop.

This is pretty much your only roadside option to replace the valve stem. My ‘54 MG comes with tire spoons so you can pull the bead over the rim to repair the tube... but really the tires and rims aren’t any different from a modern tire and rim when it comes to the beads.

I have no advice. Just personal experience.

I had this happen on a car a few years back, and once one went, the others on the car started going immediately after, so I ended up getting all four valve stems done at the tire shop.

Do the Tercel wheels fit the truck?

I have no answers for you. But this is short work at a tire shop.

Pull the tire off, and run over the edge with another car to break the bead. Pull a new stem through.

It seems you already took care of this, but yes, you can replace the valve stem without completely removing the tire. I say completely, because you need to unseat the bead by completely deflating the tire. Pop the bead, push out old valve stem, push in new from the back. Re-inflate tire and reseat the bead (hope you have a serious air compressor or CO2!).

Done it on the trail a couple of times.
