Kinja'd!!!

In case anyone was wondering just how stringent MA safety inspections were, this is the list of everything they check for. Yeah, it’s a pain for folks with older cars but it keeps a lot of unsafe vehicles off of our roads and reduces the number of accidents/casualties that result from parts failures.

That looks largely similar to the Texas safety inspection. Of course, just about anything here will pass if you take your car to the right guy and bring him a bit of cash.

The shop I went to last time seemed to be taking great joy in repeatedly failing a BMW driver last time I got my car inspected. Overall though the Texas inspect seems pretty weak. In New York they are supposed to do a wheel off check of at least one corner, and I think are also supposed to have the car on a lift to check for structural defects under the car.

There really aren’t a lot of things on that list where it would be ok for them to be broken. We definitely need inspections, we just also need to make sure consumers are protected from inspection shops essentially holding cars hostage over work that doesn’t really need to be done.

It’d be amusing to see what this would do to the vehicle fleet in WA and OR. We don’t have much rot/rust in the PNW, but there are some well-used vehicles on the road.

I think the fintail could get past all but maybe the visible smoke check, however when the owner’s manual claims consuming a quart of oil every 800 miles is normal, oh well.

The problem is that many states don’t inspect for half that, or even have a safety inspection at all.

I agree that is a problem. But a lot of people hate them and there are some valid reasons for that. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have them though. My state, in it’s quest to make itself ever shittier is trying to get rid of inspections (the Senate has already passed a bill, but not sure of the House has).

Yeah I’m not sure what that category is. It might be the technician’s discretion.

I’m hoping they don’t pass it. At least with the current inspections someone is trying to check the crappy cars. Though at the moment it just means we’ve got a lot of cars out there with neither inspection or registration.
