Woodman’s
is a Wisconsin-based supermarket known for being huge, cheap, decorated with ugly wood paneling, and chaotically disorganized but very well-stocked, except in the areas they choose to ignore like butcher & seafood counters. It’s run by crazy low budget tv commercial personality, Phil Woodman.
For some reason, Phil Woodman decided at some point to adopt “¡Ay Caramba!” as his catchphrase, likely after becoming too much of an early-90s Simpsons enthusiast.

So because of this, when Woodman’s features a particularly incredible deal on one of their large yellow price signs, they sometimes stick a red CARAMBA! sticker on the price tag to draw additional attention among the stacks and stacks and stacks of merchandise.
The “¡Ay Caramba!” Phil Woodman catchphrase isn’t in every commercial, but it is notably absent in this one with a Spanish-speaking employee hawking piñatas and Jumex drinks.

I love me some Woodman’s, because it’s damn cheap, has lots of good stuff, and I appreciate Phil’s brand of crazy, but I can’t help but think that maybe a sign on the door announcing your willingness to hire 15 year olds in your store is not the best place for a bright red CARAMBA! sticker?
I dunno. I’m conflicted.

I prefer Aldi.
The only Woodman’s they opened near me is in the ‘hood.
Well, not IN the hood, but a direct Westernly travel down a road that starts in the hood and ends at the freeway/Woodman’s. Lots of theft in that store I’ve heard.

If they project that playful attitude (didn’t watch the videos but I’m assuming they do) I would let that slide.
Here in VA you have to have a workers permit, and your hours are drastically limited if you are 15. They probably just decided to adjust their scheduling policy to compensate for the shorter shifts.
I guess this is their way of letting the locals know that they have decided to start doing it.
Not a lot of places want to waste their time catering to those requirements.

My wife loves my tuna salad so much she started initiating the Tuna Salad Service Request System consisting of leaving a can of tuna out on the counter to signal that she wants me to make some. I wrote the recipe down so she could make it herself, but this has not decreased the frequency of Tuna Salad Service Request System tickets.

I don’t think they’re deliberately being racist, and I’m not offended by it. I’m just thinking that in a supermarket with low-wage workers, the majority of whom tend to be minorities, the sticker was perhaps ill-considered, in a sorta-funny way because of the whole Phil Woodman CARAMBA backstory.

Racist? I didn’t see that at all. I thought you were just referring to the use of his catch phrase on the “now hiring 15 yrolds” sign.
After watching the first video, seems “caramba” has lost all meaning and Phil is just using it as his catch phrase.
Seems harmless to me. At least he didn’t get his catchphrase from Django Unchained

Yeah, they’re only really good for food... especially vegetables. We always tend to need a few items they don’t carry, and WalMart and Meijer are just as close.
But fuck Pick ‘N Save. Overpriced mis-marked crap half the time... every time I shop there I end up at the front desk arguing about an ad, a coupon, or a price on the shelf that’s wrong.

It’s totally harmless and not racist either.
They often have Now Hiring signs in the doors or out front, but they don’t usually have CARAMBA! stickers on them.
I thought the combination of not-actually-underage labor and the CARAMBA! sticker was funny in that it could potentially be looked at negatively if someone didn’t know about the catchphrase.

Is it a sticker or printed on the paper? It might have been in the printer and whoever made it wasn’t bothered enough to re-print a new one on plain paper.
