Is it me, or is this really insulting?

So at the Indy 500 award banquet last night, Alonso was rewarded Rookie of the 500 [not Year— duh, I stupid] honors, which comes with a $50000 USD bonus. Due to engine failure he finished 24th, which earned him $255,805 USD. This was his only Indycar race of the season.

Ed Jones, an ACTUAL ROOKIE FOR THE ENTIRE INDYCAR SEASON, finished 3rd, paying $535,629 USD, but no rookie bonus!

I think it was a desparate choice by Indycar to award that to Alonso.

I don’t know much about it beyond what you just wrote, but it sounds like Indy was taking advantage of the PR boost afforded by Alonso. Everybody in Europe was following it, but they wouldn’t know Ed Jones from a hole in the ground.

I think there’s a different award for the Indy 500 ROY and season ROY.

Indy 500 Rookie of the Year is only for the 500 and is separate from the 2017 Rookie of the Year. The 500 Rookie of the Year looks at their performance and presence (as in interviews and such) throughout the entire month of May as well as their finishing position. Jones may have finished better overall than Alonzo but Fernando put on the better performance through the entire month.

Jokes aside, it’s a bargain for the hundreds of millions of dollars Alonso’s presence in the race made by boosting attendance, coverage, viewership, etc.

UK viewership was up almost 1000%.

I think 400 people must have watched it.

The rookie award was from Sunoco, so it was essentially a $50k check in order to use Alonzo for marketing purposes. As he’s a bit more well known than Ed Jones they get more bang for their marketing dollars.

Nobody was actually awarding anyone anything so much as shooting for product placement. I guarantee you that check is only cashable if he agrees that his name or likeness can be posted up at gas stations or whatever.

So, yes, shitty, but it’s not Indycar awarding anybody, which is an important distinction.

TIL I chose the wrong profession.

I would LOVE to get paid a quarter of a million dollars to lose a race.

You know what’s insulting?

Kinja'd!!!

Having to sit around and smile for the camera when someone gives you a check that’s equivalent (in salary percentage) to someone buying me lunch.

The 500 Rookie of the Year regularly goes to someone other than the highest placing rookie. It ’ s like any other voted upon award. The Oscar for Best Picture doesn ’ t go to the film with the largest box office take and the Grammy for Album of the Year doesn ’ t go to the one with the most sales, etc. etc.

Are we sure this wasn’t a bookie paying him for blowing the engine up to ensure he didn’t cover the spread?

Well.....You have to *win* a lot of races first. Maybe be a double world champion at something. And *then* you get paid to lose.

.....But I agree, Alonso is still drying his tears with 100$ bills.

True, but Ed Jones could use that 50 grand more than Alonso. I think the reward was wasted in what they thought was good PR.

Europeans are better at knowing their own.

Us ‘Muricans barely know what goes on in the next state over.

I don’t know of a single person who watches Nascar in Europe. The additional of Alonso has zero influence.

Edit: Indy, not Nascar. Same difference though. It’s like using European players in American Football. Great, but people will still not care at all. It’s a US-only thing.

Ok, it’s time for me to lay down.

I wrote “rookie of the year” earlier when I meant just for the race.

Now, I read “bookie” as “Wookie”. Trice!!!

Worth noting that Indystar has been pretty vocal about not liking that Alonzo was running at Indy.
