Hey I’m going to Columbus Oh this weekend for a show and since it’s like a 8 hour drive for me I’ll be getting in Saturday afternoon and leaving Monday morning as the show is Sunday night. My question is: what is there to do in Columbus? My web searches don’t bring a whole lot up, also what are the must eat sort of things/places that don’t involve chili on spaghetti?

Icelandic prog rock for your time.. Also I’m seeing these guys while I’m there! Stoked!

Bad chili is mostly a Cincy thing afaik.

Most I’ve got is a purportedly great burger type restaurant that I saw on man vs food or some other food network show.

Best thing to do in Columbus: drive an hour west to the Air Force museum in Dayton

Not much in way of attractions in Columbus but good food all over in all price ranges. Schmidts Sausage Haus und Restaurant, Hofbrauhaus, Cap City Diner, Piada Italian (cheap- interesting Italian), Marcellas, Dirty Franks Hot Dogs, City Barbeque (tasty, not fancy), Smokey Bones or Local Cantina (Gahanna *****). I’ve eaten at probably 50 places in the area. There is also Pies and Pints if you like good beer and pizza, B-Spot for great burgers and Rusty Bucket for all sorts of good food. Polaris Mall or Easton for shopping. At Easton there is one of my favorite restaurants Bon Vie, dress clean casual to fit it. Great food at Bon Vie with a decent bar and higher end atmosphere at moderate prices. Never been disappointed there. If its sunny sit on the outside and watch the shoppers by the fountain.

If you go there its huge and you need to get there early and check in to see the presidential hangar. The lunch room type food at the museum is filling and won’t make you sick. Here’s a link to get an idea of what the museum has. Its a free museum , you paid for it with your taxes. Its on the Wright Patterson Air Base, security is high, have common sense.

Are you talking unique to the city or bide time? Also where in Cbus is the show/where are you staying? And the Chili thing is Cinci

There are a couple Gaming barcades, Pins and 16 Bit , those are always fun to go to.

Easton Shopping center is a good place if you are just looking to waste time. The also have Melt which is amazing

Near 16 bit Bar and Arcade there is Mikeys Late of night slice that has great pizza right near it off S 4th street

The Short North and Arena District has just about any restaurant or bar you could think of. And Express live and the Basement always has something playing.

The Zoo, normally nationally ranked, and Water Park Zoombezi Bay are 20 minutes north of the city.

The North Market is cool, small but tons of different shops and foods, Hot Chicken Takeover is the main go to restaurant there (weird hours though 11am to 3pm) Also if you go make sure to get you parking validated if you park in their lot.

Mid-Ohio is having its first of the season OVR SCCA road racing event. Tons of different classes and events. Though its about 1 hour North East. Admission says $10 but could be more (they have started to raise prices)

This List is pretty good for best food in Cbus .

Cars and Coffee is normally on Saturday at Lennox 24 AMC

Any other questions let me know.

The Thurman Cafe. I’ve been, I think twice (non-Columbus Ohio Opponaut). The food is absurdly oversized, also awesome.

Also, Melt Bar & Grilled, on Short North. The original location in Lakewood (outside Cleveland) was on DD&D and MvF, but you’ll find the same stuff at their Columbus location.

The Columbus Zoo is huge and could eat up a lot of time.

COSI (Center of Science and Industry) was awesome when I was a kid...I haven’t been in close to 30 years though.

Great news is they’ve built a fourth hanger. You no longer need to register to take the bus onto the base for the presidential and experimental aircraft.

You’ll still want to get there early though. There’s so much to see that a first visit can easily take all day.

the show is at the Palace and we are staying at the double tree right next store.

We were thinking the zoo, but kind of meh on the idea also depends on weather and Sunday hours of operations. the market sounds fun! I’d love to do the cars and coffee but we wont get into town till like 3 or 4 Saturday.

thanks for all the good info!

I believe Columbus has two mellow mushroom pizza locations. Good pizza and beer selection. I used to grab a pie on my way through to Cleveland from Dayton. And I second the USAF museum. Great side trip. You can spend a day there. You can also zip up to wapakoneta to check out the Niel Armstrong space museum, though that ones not a must.

Np and ah ok so downtown which would be really close to North Market, Arena District, and Short North.

The Zoo normally opens at 9am, sometimes earlier. And the Zoo is in a suburb called Powell which has some decent places to eat if need be

If you end up in Dayton there are some nice pubs. If there you must stop at the Dorothy Lane Market. Great wine selection, fantastic gourmet and health food items. It used to be listed on Trip Advisor as the best restaurant in Dayton. It has a small restaurant area to eat on the premises but you can get some great stuff to take home or good road trip food. Its awesome, my wife and I had heard about it so we stopped there while in the area just to get dessert stuff for after dinner. We went to dinner at Bravo Italian then had wines and cheesecake later in our hotel room.

Couple other places you should add, Thurman cafe, Melt (at Easton), anything at North Market, Pint Room (Dublin), Deweys Pizza, and Villa Nova. Also check my comment for the list

All good places. Columbus has more good places for food than many similar size cities. When we visit my daughter we explore new places all the time. I was down there last Saturday night but it was raining and way too late for me to go out looking for food. Akron and Cleveland areas have a few good places to eat but Columbus is fantastic for foodies. Some day I’m going to Veritas Tavern in Delaware have heard it awesome. Tried Don Pablos and Fox & Hound in Dayton, both okay but not real impressive.

we are also planning the north market sunday for lunch.

Kinja'd!!!

Hell yes I forgot to add that. It can kind of be but everything there is amazing and is normally one of the Main Food stands to go to at the Ohio state far. To give you a small idea its one of the places he stops at on Man vs Food. Starts about the 8 min mark

OK, sweet! I was worried when it wasn’t on your list that covers just about every thing else! great then! I’m stoked. we are going to do dinner there saturday as I don’t think that’s pre-concert food. then lunch/brunch at that market. just looking for cheap/free things to fill the time now around the show and eating. haha

Its on there, just at the last spot at #50 lol. But I think it definitely should be higher. North market is a good place to kill time, COSI is cool and close (Center of Science and Industry) but its gotten expensive $30 bucks per person including parking. I remember when it was less than $6 total. Alot of stuff down town cost something to do other than go to the parks near COSI (Bicentennial is one). The Franklin Park Conservatory is cool but again is cost money ($14).

Schmidt is worth it. I haven’t been in a few months though.

I’d recommend Thurman Cafe for really good and ginormous burgers.

Nirth Market for lunch is also a good idea. I recommend having Hot Chicken Takeover for lunch in there, or pizza from Saferino’s

You won’t regret the choice.

Be sure you save room for their Cream Puffs. They are especially great.

From Schmidt’s, I recommend getting the Bahama Mama (bratwurst). It’s the right balance of sweet and spicy. It’s not spicy at all though for me

Cause this punk has lived in or a burb of Columbus for 2+ decades. Actually just moved north of the city to Delaware because 2+ car garage. But I didn’t know we had Spiderman‘s Italian cousin somewhere in our city? Lol. Assuming you have been to the Lennox Cars & Coffee? (Even though there isn’t any more coffee)

Yeah, I still go from time to time.

Why? Is the Cup O Joe there closing also like the Bexley one?

I’m in Dublin

Yep the Cup of Joe was close down when I went last Saturday. Not sure how long the Johnny Rockets has been closed but it was too.

Ah ok may have pasted you a couple of times then, I used to live right by the OSU airport off of Sawmill. Had a Dublin zip but i think it was technically still Columbus. Might be down for the Memorial Tournament this weekend

Oh damn, that a bummer about Cup O Joe.

I also used to live at Sawmill and Cranston (4 years ago). What car do you drive?

I’m going to the Memorial tomorrow
