Makes me want to break out my Hobart MIG. What do you use? Those are some clean welds!

Quite sharp. I did a bit o’ welding meself yesterday, only it was a brace for my front suspension.

Thanks man!

We’ve got this ancient old welder of indeterminate origin (all the controls are in Italian, but we can’t see a make or model anywhere). Picked it up at an auction for not much money at all but it’s been brilliant :)

None at the moment. A bit like the one with the end that can be seen in this picture - a bit of strap with some reinforcing:

Mine was a bit fancier, of course - like I’d discussed. 5/8ID/3/4OD bronze bushing passing through rubber washer, brace, and extra machine bushing on brace, all held tight by 5/8" machine bushing and original nut. A bit more instant yield than the above, and more damping, but looks about the same.

Ah yes, your rather impressive fix for the ‘eccentric’ engineering decision of the bellcrank front wishbone mount ;)

I think I’ve got it all mapped out in my head, but I’ve found that it’s rather difficult picturing suspension components based on words describing them. Can’t wait to see it all completed and I can see if my head-model is anything like the real thing ;)

Very nicely done, I like the bottom shelf, very unique.

Now for something that’s not nearly as pretty. I welded up a diff recently with a mig. Look away if you have a weak stomach

Haha could be worse ;) at least it looks like you’ve got half-decent penetration :)

What car’s it on?

Yeah, that’s the good side. The other side with the ring gear was almost impossible to hit with the mig gun, so I just gobbed on lots of welds on the 3 other sides. I cut a plate to go in between the gears to give more surface to weld to.

This is from a 2001 BBW 330i. Makes parking a bit more of a hassle, but seems worth it so far.

Hah, not too bad then if it’s holding together. Welds don’t need to look pretty to do the job right ;)

Sturdier than I’d planned too! Made a mistake ordering materials so the box section is 3mm wall. Could probably park a car on it if you were inclined to...

Did you seal the steel somehow to keep it from rusting?

I haven’t yet, but i will be picking up some matte varnish just to seal it with :) don’t want it to ruat if you spill coffee on it or something

I’m assuming that’s plain steel and it’ll rust because rust.

Yeah, mild steel box section was £18 for 7m, whereas stainless was about £40 :S plus it would look too shiny...
