Kinja'd!!!

Niece: Buy me GTA V, it’s on sale on steam!

Me: What? You’re eleven years old! That game isn’t for kids!

Niece: Well I already got it on my PS4 at home (she lives away from home a lot) and I already beat it.

Me: What? You saw that scene with Trevor? (the game introduces us to him pounding away on his friend’s girlfriend)

Niece: Well...yeah but when I play again I skip it!

Me: BUT THAT MEANS YOU SAW IT!!

Niece: I didn’t mean to see it!

Me: What about your baby brother? What if he walks in on you with this game and that scene is playing, Huh?!

Niece: * bursts out laughing*

Me: THAT’S NOT FUNNY!! (it kinda is, though)

Niece: *still laughing* Well, he’s gotta find out some time!

Me: THAT IS TERRIBLE! YOU ARE A TERRIBLE SISTER!! *undercutting myself by holding back laughter*

my 9 year old daughter asked to play this game just last weekend. I’m like... what?!?! no.

But then again, in the 80's when I was very young, i’m sure i saw alot worse.

Having been a teenager in the 80s, I can assure you that what you see now is much worse.

My nieces (5&7) are huge fans of Divekick and my sister is properly pissed at me for introducing it to them. That said it taught them the concept of GG and since then there are no more tantrums when one of them loses at something. So from my point of view, introducing a fighting game to young siblings was a net benefit.

My parents let me watch Rush Hour when I was a little kid and I turned out fine.... Doesn’t mean I’m going to let my little cousin watch it.

Was playing GTA4 a few years ago. I’d go to the hospitals and mess around in them. Next thing I know I hear my cousin’s kid howling with laughter. I had no idea she was in the room and she must’ve been around 7 or 8 at the time

Absolutely. If I go back and watch the scariest or raunchiest stuff I can remember from the 80s, it’s like mid-level cable TV now (FX, SyFy). All the Freddy and Jason movies, Meatballs, Revenge of the Nerds, even all the Skinemax pron. It’s like normal everyday stuff.

People were appalled when whatever fighting video game it was (Street Fighter?) had a player pull somebody’ spine out in 16-bit. Something like that would cause yawns today.

I was about 13 at my grandparents house for Christmas and convinced them to take me to the store so I could buy gta3.

About 5 years later my grandpa told me that if he knew what was in that game he’d have never let me buy it.

Still feel guilty.

i let my daughters play (offline no missions, they are 5) One of them tries to obey traffic laws and walks around like a normal person. The other just drives around crashing... cuz shes 5 and can’t play video games. They don’t get to watch me play.

It was Mortal Kombat.

Mortal Kombat. What I remember best about that game was it was photorealistic, unlike Street Fighter which was more “cartoony” (with sprite-based characters, I think it’s called). But most people overlooked how crappy the gameplay was — jerky and nonintuitive. That was the first mediocre game that made it really big from its violence alone. But like you said, now it’s all normal. Had it been sexual in nature, I’m sure it would have been banned because we’re collectively weird like that.

Yes, Mortal Kombat. I generally stuck to Pac Man, Moon Patrol and Tron. I was never into the fighting games, but I imagine that the same motivation was present then as it is today for the people who like those sorts of games. They just weren’t as sophisticated.

I think that one of the big differences is that, back in the 80s, we played all of our games in public at a video arcade. Now we play in the privacy of our homes, so there is absolutely no societal pressure to keep things even slightly toned down.

Which gets me thinking: maybe I should charge my boys 25¢ every time they want to play FIFA on the PS3. I might make some of my money back.

And still $36 three and a half years after it came out. I’m looking for steeper discounts Rockstar!

Also yeah, probably not appropriate for your niece.

People in 2017; “Meh.” “I’ve seen worse.” “Whatever.”

Well you don’t have to discount anything when people keep buying it at reliable enough numbers. The discounts only come when the need to boost sales arises and that will likely never be the case for GTA V. Maybe after GTA 6 comes out, but that’s a looooooooooooooong time from now.

Divekick is pretty tame as fighting games go anyways. It’s not like Mortal Kombat with those X-ray finishing movies of cracked skulls and broken spines.

I was... 13 or 14 when I bought GTA 4? I basically had to make a powerpoint for my dad saying “this is what the game is, yes this can happen, no I won’t pick up sex workers” in order to convince him to let me buy it.

My step-mum was against the whole thing, but then she bought GTA V for her son when he was 12 with no issue, so bollocks to her.

Well, there was always the PC, but in the 80s that was the realm of creepy and/or nerdy people...not mainstream like it is now.

Remember Leisure Suit Larry? People were like “It’s a computer game with sex in it?!” (and it wasn’t even graphic, more PG-13 “suggestive”)

Yep, I need them to make a single-player only version to help them avoid the fact that GTA Online is still popular and profitable. Their motivations to do so are probably limited though.

I’m still surprised by the level of violence and gore in some network TV shows nowadays. It’s like a typical (nearly) bloodless PG-13 movie is almost quaint in comparison.

Maybe it’s just my imagination. The graphics today in movies and games is so much clear that little is left for you to fill in yourself. So when I think back in time it’s my imagination that makes me think it was worse? Everything was so bad detail wise you had no choice. Kinda like reading a book.
