Kinja'd!!!

Fuel gauge fixed, motor mounts replaced, rear shocks down, Wacky Suspension Crank Brace installed, falling out bondo removed, radiator... now leaking worse than before. Hmmm.

So much for trying to fix things, amirite?

Due to miscellaneous silly purchases I haven’t finished funding, I may or may not order the new radiator before the end of the week. Between that and highly suspect tires and limited test driving (possible other leaks), SE Oppo meet is looking iffy.

By way of explaining - there was a leak in the radiator at the trans cooler inlet, around the fitting (crack). Attempted solder. Solder was not successful.

There was bondo falling out of a horrible lesion on the side, which turns out to be a crease running a long way down the rear fender. It has all been ground out and temporarily resealed, so now I just have an off-color stripe down the fender with a crease, and not the Happy Fun Time Cracking Bondo & Rust Land. Because trapping water is wrong and must stop.

Oh, I also cleaned up the trunk, made a new wingbolt for the spare/jack/tire iron and installd the “dogleg” seals on the front doors.

Sounds like the Galaxie showed you whose boss today. Time for you to remind it not to bite the hand that feeds it.

It doesn’t have a fan shroud, so some varieties of horrifying biting would not be a surprise. It’s also slightly better tuned as of today, but as one other little thing, the check ball in the trans for de-harshing the shift to reverse must (as far as I can figure) either be stuck or I must have an older trans. It was supposed to be The New Thing with the trans as of ‘63, but it likes to go into reverse with a solid bang. At least I’ve replaced the vacuum servo so forward shifts should be a little less random.

Fingers crossed it isn’t a new transmission.

It’s very fresh inside... of course, after I put it back together after replacing the front pump seal, it seemed to still be leaking. May have been the gasket (needed retorquing - just did that) or (hopefully isn’t) the pump seal getting bodged on reassembly. I may have fixed it - who knows? Some may be left over from the rear seal, which is also replaced but I haven’t driven it much in the two weeks since then.

Oil on side of motor, but no more leaks from the pan or the front main. Might be a valve cover gasket. Bleh.

So what you’re saying is your Galaxie is gonna be in the “Service Position” for a while yet, eh?

It’s going to be driven to work tomorrow. Leaking slightly.

Yeah I heard you can drive these old Body-On-Frame cars while they’re still in the Service Position

Joking aside, there are some very weird fit issues going on with the front left fender and the hood. The hood is a quarter inch short of the fender, and the fender is too far back. The driver’s door has been replaced, so there may be a number of fucky things requiring partial reversion to Service Position to fix. Eventually.

On another note, I found the lap belt anchors, and it looks like putting in a seat belt should be plug and play. Not something I was willing to kill myself for, but since they were an option, not a terrible idea if easy to do. Which they seem to be.

You gonna make it to the SE Oppo meet regardless?

Don’t know yet. Depends on how lulz-worthy I feel and whether I get some serious hours on it (and decide it’s okay) or replace the radiator.

Fair enough. Somehow I’ve only got to work three days this week so I planning on going.

That’s good. I am surprised the car even came with them. I wonder what year it became a mandatory feature?

‘66, I believe. There were actually two options for seatbelts in the Galaxie in ‘63 - a cloth “friction” style one and one with a metal clasp - kind of like an airplane seat.

Turns out the leak *is* actually better or no worse than it was, so it will hold up over distance. I tried fiddling today with the vacuum modulator (the device that tells the trans how fast the engine’s turning over to adjust pressure) because I wasn’t shifting when I needed to. The Lincoln has an earlier version of the Cruise O Matic, so its trans setup uses an “anti-stall dashpot” instead - it bumps the gas up(!) if you start to stall abruptly, instead of choking off the transmission pressure. Its only pressure regulation is in the valves and the governor.

Anyway, got the vacuum modulator *better*, which means it will kick into top gear about when it’s supposed to - it’s still not quite right, but where I had it (new modulator, initial adjust) it wasn’t going into second from first unless forced and was resisting 2-3 as well. Got some fouling on the new plugs, needs to be taken out on the road and flogged. I made some progress toward that - got it up to 70+ this evening. Pretty good.

Really? How weird. I figured they would just have one option the bare minimum because the consumer didn’t like seat belts anyway.

It’s funny - people didn’t like the idea of a seatbelt being *required*, but it was still (like an airbag later on) considered kind of a premium feature. Particularly if it was on a sporty model where you might need to be tied down. And, since Ford could make money on them that way, they did. It’s also the case that you didn’t have to buy any more seatbelts than you wanted to - you could do driver only, or both, or maybe even three for the front row if you wanted. I’ve got a plastic model of a ‘64 Thunderbird, and there is a little plastic seatbelt (driver only) that is included in the kit for *if* you want it to have the option...

That is quite funny. Reminds me of backup cameras in today’s cars a little bit. It is now a required feature but you can spec for a premium option
