Some people seem to get their knickers in a twist over the fact that he actually appears to get some FUN (the horror) out of the game. Seriously? 1) it’s supposed to be fun (and that doesn’t have to be limited to the fans), and 2) if you don’t enjoy something... you are quite often shit at it. You can be shit at something you enjoy, but the other way around is a rarity. These guys really need to think about what they’re asking for. They want everyone to be like Toews. I mean, I like him and he’s awesome, but an entire league of people who rarely crack a smile... no thanks.
I just hate this mindset that everyone needs to fit a mold and not rock the boat. Subban is enthusiastic? Showboat. Trash. It’s not just him, either. Rookie Tomas Hertl not only got four goals in a total rout by SJ, but his fourth was incredibly awesome? Dick. Showoff. Shouldn’t be rubbing it in like that. Matthews’ four-goal debut? Worst thing he could have done for himself (to be fair, that last one came from Burke, so it carries less weight than a helium balloon). Etc.
And re your second point, he isn’t really. He was one of the most popular players in Montreal (after he got traded a local restaurant actually changed it’s name temporarily in his honour), and after just one year he’s also one the most popular players in Nashville. But I have to admit that thought has crossed my mind.
But as far as the actual trade goes... that’s got to be straight-up racism from the Habs management. There’s no other reason to do it. Don’t get me wrong, Weber is an absolute beast. But trading away the younger, cheaper, fairly evenly-matched Subban for him? Idiocy. It works out for me now though, as a Leafs fan—I can cheer for Subban because he’s no longer a Hab :)
