I expected a tear. I did not expect that. Sure, it sounded awful whenever there was any bass, but I’m actually sort of impressed that it didnt sound worse considering the speaker was in such bad shape.

This also makes me shudder to think what condition the other three are in, especially since these are $60 shipped.

Apparently the old one was Phillips and the new OEM one I received was PSS.

Although they look exactly the same.

As an aside, I am now a master at tearing down X308 doors. Maybe ten minutes elapsed from the moment I popped off the first screw cover to when I put it back on. Not bad considering it took me an hour and a half the first time I opened it up.

When I buy a luxury car that is too old to stream Pandora from my iPhone, I’m considering just getting a portable bluetooth speaker to put in the passenger seat. The sound in those things is very good.

And then I can drive around feeling like one of the Beverley Hillbillies updated for 2017.

It’s impossible to upgrade the radio in the Jag. I’ve decided to just embrace listening to CDs and the radio again.

Just have to jump over the dookie factory amp. They probably make a plug and play harness for it.

When I was first looking, there was a lot of debate over whether the speakers were 5.25" or 6.5", and Crutchfield wasn’t helping, since they gave a range of sizes. I didn’t want to take the door apart to measure, so I decided to just buy an OEM one through a Jag part supplier. In retrospect, if I had known what bad condition that one was in, I’d have just ordered an aftermarket set and replaced them all. I probably will do that the next time one blows.

The real problem is the head unit. It’s a really weird shape and curved. Only a few people bother replacing them, and it almost always ends up looking like garbage. Plus you have to fabricate your own face plate.

Oh hah yea fuck that! If you’re going to keep it forever someone makes a really nice line output converter with aux built in (so you can keep the factory head and go aftermarket with everything else), prob bluetooth at this point too. I went that route for the M3 as it’s another car where anything aftermarket in the dash looks like garbage. The converter was more expensive than any head unit I’ve ever bought but it’s the only one that I have used that actually sounds good, and isn’t subject to interference/ ground loops.

In the 5.25/6,5 case, it usually means that 6.5 speakers fit, but you can also use 5.25's with adapter brackets. And you can always call or email Crutchfield with any questions, and they will be glad to help.

Hmm, surprising that there’s no Grom Bluetooth adapter available at least, but I guess Jag is just too low volume or something. It looks like there was a CD changer available, which you’d think would be pin compatible with someone’s though.

This is what I have to save me the indignity of using a cassette adapter:

It works fine, though feels very pricey for what you get. A new head unit would definitely provide more value for the money, but there’s no real way to mount one in my car and have it look good without a ton of work.
