Good morning everybody! I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday weekend, Hapy Memorial Day to you all. Please remember that while this may be a 3 day weekend for most of you, this is most likely a 0 day weekend for many car sales professionals. In that vein, please be kind to the people skipping time with their families to help you find a car, and don’t go kicking tires without intent. This is how people pay their bills and spending their time with joy riders can take them away from making a sale.

Kinja'd!!!

Thanks guys, and be safe!

I don’t know that’s he’s usually supposed to be funny. There’s a lot of roles that I’ve seen him in where his character is a sad shell of a man and he brings a sense of over the top surrealness to the role that makes it situationally funny. In those cases he’s exactly who he’s supposed to be.

Lol are you serious?

I respect anyone but don’t ask for special treatment just because you’re working your job on a holiday weekend. You make it sound like you’re giving some huge sacrifice to work some extra hours and make some money.

How else are people supposed to know if they like a car without kicking tires? Part of a salesman’s job is supposed to be helping make the buying public make informed purchasing decisions and part of that is driving around driving various cars and weighing the options. If you chose a job where you’re paid on commission or “OUR SALESMAN ARE NON COMMISSIONED” (which is bullshit) and you make dick-all until you make a certain threshold of sales, well, that’s on you.

Is your job commission based? Because if not, the whole “work your job, make more money” thing is clearly out of your grasp. If I sell something then yes I’ll get paid. But if I end up having customers who just want to joyride because they have nothing better to do then I’ve been apart from my family for no reason. You sound like another joyrider who doesn’t respect people’s time or their profession.

lol you’re a car salesman, not an EMT or some shit. You signed up for it because you like money, not because you’re making some noble sacrifice. Don’t like working weekends and holidays? Get a different job, that’s what I did. Seriously I’ve never met a bigger bunch of whiny snowflakes than car salesmen.

Yeah, I did. And what difference does “intent to buy” make? I might be thinking of getting a BRZ or a first-gen Cayman or a base model C6 in a couple years. Do I have intent to buy? Nah, not right now. But I have been watching local dealerships looking for the spec of car I’m thinking of to get a chance to test drive them all and decide which I’d like to work for, or if they’re a big enough improvement on my Miata for me to even bother.

Hey I meant to ask what states you sell in. I will be searching for a new mama wagon in the next year, and am looking at the XC series Volvos, there was a nice R Design in Charlotte at an MB dealer. So if’n you was close by to Nashville and had something of interest, I would be happy to purchase from a fellow Oppo.

So you’re looking at used cars now, knowing the car you drove will be sold in a matter of weeks and won’t be available in a few years when you’re ready. On the used market, every car drives differently. You’re asking someone to work for free so that you can drive someone else’s car in hopes of finding out if you’ll like a completely different one when the time comes.

I don’t really respect your profession, you’re right. Franchise dealerships are bullshit. Your industry exists solely because lobbyists have protected it to milk their fortunes out of the automotive industry while doing little actual work. The car makers design the cars, advertise the cars, give you the cars, and you get to make money off of them.

And it’s not MY fault you work for a commission. That’s your choice and it’s a choice that you and your colleagues have made. You could stand up and say you’d like to make an hourly wage and give up your commission but the money is better for you this way so this is what you get.

If you really have this much disdain to every customer that isn’t explicitly in the store to buy a car that day then you must be a pretty mediocre salesman. If you’re really here crying about giving up your 3 day weekend then you must be incredibly short sighted at the opportunity you’ve been given.

Most dealerships aren’t open on Sunday and many customers work during the week. This one weekend gives customers that otherwise might not have an opportunity to shop for a car and a dealer to visit dealerships and test drive cars. Whether or not someone is in the market this minute doesn’t reflect that they may be in the market soon. Being shitty to then because you won’t earn a commission this day is not a great way to make a future sale but it sure is a great way to let that sale go.

Get over yourself. Millions of people undoubtedly are working today and tomorrow, you aren’t special. If you don’t want tire kickers to ‘waste your time’ then pick a different profession.

It’s a shame that a grown man has no empathy for someone who has take a different path in life than himself. You obviously do what you want when you want and expect others to “get over it”. That’s nothing but a piss poor attitude at work and says more about you than my message about my profession ever could. Congratulations, you’re a shitty human being.

No I don’t. Most car salesmen don’t. That response right there tells me you have no idea what it’s like to be on the other side of the desk. And your other responses tell me you have no desire to try to understand. Your holier than thou attitude is why salesmen act as shitty as they do. You think saying this shit makes you special? Half of the populous that I talk to think they’re better than me. Youve done nothing but confirm how people treat salesmen. I was non combative in my original post, just giving people something to think about, and you immediately started talking shit. Once again, congratulations on being a shitty person.

And the fact that you say the manufacturer “gives us the car” shows just how much you’re talking out of your ass. You have no idea how the manufacturer-dealer relationship works.

MY holier than thou attitude? Coming from the person that posted asking for special consideration this weekend that’s amusing. You may have been non-combative but you sure went out of your way to act like you’re making some big sacrifice this weekend, which is especially excessive considering the holiday Monday is to remember those who have made genuine sacrifices so you can make your precious commissions today.

Many salespeople I’ve known in various industries make a base pay with commission on top. I did not realize you didn’t, my apologies.

It’s called hyperbole.

Explain to me what value a dealership adds to the car buying process that makes a manufacturer value that relationship in such a way that they wouldn’t ditch a franchise dealer model if they were legally able to.

Empathy? Why do you need empathy here? I simply stated that you chose this path and as a result you get to work this weekend. Where exactly do you want support from me?

Your interpretation of me here is pretty unfair. I’m not complaining about my workplace to strangers on the internet, it’s work. You chose a commission based profession in an industry where holiday weekends like this require you to be present: sorry I’m not sorry. I am not critical of salespeople in general, I’ve dealt with plenty of good ones and a handful of bad ones. Good luck with your weekend, I hope you don’t get stuck with too many tire kickers.

A Vette is a Vette is a Vette. I can drive any old c6 at a dealer and get an idea for if I like the car or not. A salesman was ahppy to let me lick the tires and test drive an ND Miata and I determined quickly that I had no desire for one in the future.

Do you know that most manufacturers don’t want to run dealerships? They don’t want the liability of dealing with end-users. Manufacturers are in the production business, and tbat infrastructure and those people are a complete 180 from what their core competency is.

Tesla is brainwashing people that all manufacturers want to do the same thing as they are. They don’t. Tesla’s customer base in pretty much all techies who are used to paying the early adopter fee. They pay asking price and walk out happy as a pig in shit to have done it. And believe me, if BMW were to take over the dealer network TODAY, that’s exactly what everyone would be paying for our cars tomorrow. And believe me, that would be a nightmare in itself just for the backlash alone. Right now BMW has “plausible deniability” as the good guy.

Thank you. I meant well for the post. I know as a consumer it’s easier to paint me as the bad guy, but it’s been my experience that customer’s walk into dealerships expecting the worst and their treatment of salespeople make it a self fulfilling prophecy. Things don’t have to be tough. People just need to say what they mean.

Not necessarily commission but all the people in the service industry who literally make $2 an hour plus whatever tips they make. Plenty of retail positions are straight commission too. I know a lot of the local flooring and furniture places have specials all weekend and those people make commission too.

Then you’ve got people like me who work in skilled nursing facilities who work virtually every holiday. Hotel employees. Grocery store employees.

Then the actual seriously important jobs, all the doctors, police, fire fighters, EMS, and military who have to treat a holiday like any other day.

You sell cars for a living. You seem to think way too highly of yourself.

No base pay? What the fuck? So any time you spend an hour showing a prospective, interested buyer around and they end up going somewhere else you just spent several hours of your life working for free? That’s not a job, that’s propping up a horribly broken dealership system that leeches off the public and their employees and serves absolutely no purpose and should be immediately dismantled. Dealerships around here aren’t much better (at all, I’ve worked at several) but at least they give a base pay and advertise “NO PRESSURE NO COMMISSION BLAH BLAH BLAH” which, of course, means there’s still pressure since all the salesmen get is minimum wage with “bonuses” for certain sales thresholds required to have a decent living. Personally I got out of the dealership business because it’s just toxic shit pitting employees against each other and encouraging people to act like fucking children if they perceive any other employee is, in some way, getting “in the way” of their sale.

TL;DR Dealerships are broken and I give no fucks about wasting the time of people contributing to a broken system.

Yes. That’s exactly what that means.

There’s a “draw” twice a month, but it’s taken back out of your check at the end of the month. Unless you don’t make enough to cover it. They let you keep it if you don’t, but then they take out the overflow from next month’s check. And if it happens two months in a row where you can’t cover your draw, well they’re not taking a chance on overpaying you a third month...

A large manufacturer like a BMW would likely contract out the day to day operation of a dealership but, if given the opportunity, I suspect they would gladly have a high degree of control of that operation, including price.

If the price was set near asking price but that price came straight from the manufacturer rather than through a dealership I suspect customers would be willing to pay. We do it all the time for everything other than cars and houses. Customers only want to haggle because that’s what the system has produced. Look at the growth of the ‘no haggling’ model, spreading from CarMax to some standard dealerships. You can pretend that Tesla operates in some unique position but I don’t think that’s the case. Only a true consumer market survey could tell us who is right.
