Kinja'd!!!

It’s sooooo cool, it’s got a flat plane crank and boost. It’s pretty much a Ferrari. :p

I’m not wrong. ;)

I’d say you were wrong about Ferraris being turbocharged, but then I would no longer be correct =(

A least you can still get a manual in a Ford.

I didn’t know the ecoboost had a flat plane crank too. I thought it was just the Shelby.

Pretty much ALL four cylinder cars use flat plane cranks. :p

all 4-stroke 4-bangers use flat-plane cranks (except for the Yamaha YZF-R1.)

4-cylinder animation:

A V8 with a flat-plane crankshaft has the same crankpin layout (0-180-180-0) just with the journals widened to accommodate two connecting rods:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

The problem here is that a 4-cylinder engine has a pretty bad second-order (2x engine RPM) vibration since the pistons are all stopping and starting at the same time, and moving non-sinusoidally. A V8 with a flat-plane crank has the same second-order vibration problem, but worse. first in the vertical (Z) plane because of the two cylinder banks; because they join at an angle the shaking forces go up by the square root of two. Also, it creates a side-to-side shaking force since the two banks can’t cancel each other out.

the vast majority of V8 engines have cross-plane crankshafts:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

cross-plane V8s aren’t inherently in primary balance, but using counterweights on the crankshaft cancels that out. Since there aren’t any pistons simultaneously stopping and starting, they’re in secondary balance. they do have another little issue in that each bank will have two cylinders firing one after the other (left-to-right firing cadence is L-R-L-L-R-L-R-R) but intelligent exhaust design and tuning can mitigate that. on the other hand, it’s this irregular firing pattern which gives those big ‘Murican V8s their characteristic burble at idle, and roar when accelerating.

high/fast-revving V8s tend to use flat-plane crankshafts because they don’t have such heavy counterweights and thus have less rotating mass/inertia. plus they tend to be (but aren’t always) lower displacement so the reciprocating mass tends to be lighter, reducing the amount of vibration generated.

edit: on the Yamaha YZF-R1 motorcycle, they decided to use a cross-plane crankshaft on its 4-cylinder engine. apparently the irregular firing interval makes it easier for the rider to power out of a turn, it’s not as “twitchy” as a conventional 4-cylinder. This engine would be way out of primary balance, but bike engines are so small with so little rotating/reciprocating mass they probably decided it wasn’t worth worrying about:

why are people so butthurt about Ferrari using turbos? back in the late ‘80s their hottest shit was the F40 which had a twin-turbo 2.9 liter V8.

Not an issue with the concept of a turbo. What it does is eat away at the entire premise of the Ferrari V8—the famous flat plane crank noise.

F40 is great, but it can never sound as good as a 458 Speciale.
