I think you’re suppose to split the universe into two timelines, one where you ask and one were you don’t. Then have your consciousness inhabit the more beneficial one.

Seems like someone was a little salty about being asked for cash discounts and so tacked on an extra contradictory step. Seems like overkill, maybe just tell people no if they ask? Doesn’t seem like an insulting question, some places do offer cash discounts because of the benefit of avoiding the credit card company taking their share, or because they know the customer isn’t going to dispute the purchase, or because they plan on taking advantage of less legal means to decrease taxes paid on the purchase.
