TFritsch, oh knowledgeable one, I require your assistance. How fragile is the suspension on B6 and B7 Passats?

Just sprinkle some cinnamon on it. It’ll be fine.

Just a little. I think this kid has had a couple of Duralast water pumps installed.

Haha, you are too kind. They’re actually quite good, nothing at all like the B5s. Completely different cars, of course, but about all that goes wrong with the front is the lower control arm bushings and strut mounts after a lot of miles or exceptionally bad roads, and both are easy to do. The rear is a beam, quite solid, no problems whatsoever that I’ve seen. 4Motion cars have independent rear, of course, but I’ve seen no problems with them either (though there aren’t many 4motions around here). Not bad cars, really. I was looking for a B6 manual wagon for my wife for awhile before lucking into the 325iT, and being willing to own a car is about the highest compliment I can pay one. They are not without fault, but the 2.0T is pretty good, and the DSG is a solid box if you take care of it. The suspension is the last thing to worry about there.

Good, that was my plan. It’s working so far.

As you know, I’ve just adquired a 2.0T Passar Variant B7, the one you didn’t get in the US. I love the engine and the DSG wet 6 is a lovely gearbox once get used to it, but front suspension is so noisy, they foung nothing, my German mechanic can’t fing anything wrong, but it makes the worst sounds on bad roads.

I’ll bet it needs strut mounts. Sort of hard to detect visually, one telltale is if with the hood up, you see the strut tops drop more than 1/4" or so from the towers when lifting the car. The control arm bushings tend to induce more tire wear than noise, but strut mounts will make a racket. Possible it’s got a bad lower ball joint, also no visual cue on that, you’d have to check them with channel-lock pliers for vertical play.

Time for a new inspetion. The worst thing about Brazil is that the shitty roads murder imported car suspensions. Thanks!

Of course it’s fine. It’s a BMW. These last for millions of miles without any kind of issues. Or maintenance.
