What's worse? Death of a loved one or curb rash?

I’m not a total cretin, so I’ll say the death of loved one is worse. But dammit I got curb rash on one of my 2017 GTI Austin wheels.

It starts with a parallel parking job. You’ve done it before, probably 100 times in the past. You know your car, you can feel the wheelbase, you know where to line up your bumper to execute the perfect parallel parking job. The perfect job slots you in close to the curb, but not too close. It places you perfectly between the front and rear cars.

But not today. Today you were lost in thought. Thinking of work. Of bad relationships. Of health. Of life. And death.

And then the sound. The second long sound that will last years. The grinding, scraping, and peeling away of newness. A drop in the bucket of life’s small problems. But one you’ll see before every cars and coffee. You’ll remember the color of the sky, the sickening sound. The feeling of loss.

I hate curb rash.

I did that to my Jetta once!

I was pulling into a parking spot and scraped the wheel on a part of the curb that stuck out further than the other for whatever reason.

Aw, fortunately doesn’t look too terrible.

Sounds like you need a good set of 75 profile sidewalls!

Have you done alloy repair before? Had a few on my MKVI GTI done and it was super impressive. Not cheap, but...hey...we suffer for fashion. Think it was $150 p/ wheel.

I’ve never seen a repaired wheel, and I guess I’m a bit of a skeptic, but it’s good to hear they can be fixed. New wheels run about $250-ish, so $150 doesn’t sound too bad. Thanks!

Your VW dealer probably has a “guy”. I’ve had it done twice - once as part of negotiating when I was buying it and the next time repairing a baaaaad scuff from my wife. Two different dealers and turns out they used the same guy.

I just called ahead of time when I was getting an oil change, dropped car off, wheel guy came during day and it was ready when I was done with work.

You know, that’s a good idea. I’m taking it in next week to have Driver Gear (VW) lowering springs put on by the dealer. I’ll call and see if they have “a guy” to fix the wheel. Thanks!

I have some pretty serious curb rash on my front right from the previous owner. I would just replace it, but 20" chrome truck wheels are $550 each (plus shipping). I need to find some place that repairs them.

$550 is painful indeed. Gotta be cheaper to fix it. Good luck!
