Last Sunday I cracked the screen on my Google Pixel. Started a claim with Asurion (Verizon phone insurance people) and they said it’d be $200 to replace the phone because they didn’t offer screen replacement (an $80) deductible for the Pixel. Oh and they didn’t have any phones in stock and the backorder was anywhere from 3-10 days (though looking online, people said the backorder stretched for weeks). So I found UBreakIfix who is the authorized repair shop for the Pixel. Called them earlier this week to inquire about a screen replacement, they said they could do it for $130. Great. So I took off early from work today because they have 3 locations all in the south Bay about 20 miles in the opposite direction of my house. Get to the store and they tell me they’re out of stock of screens for the black Pixel! Issue with their distributor. So presumably Google’s fault.

So now I still have a phone with a cracked screen but now I have no idea how or when it’ll get fixed. Argh!

Is this the good south bay or the Northern California south bay?

Thanks to me googling “google pixel screen repair,” I have used the power of the internets to learn that the uBreakiFix website offers appointments for Google Pixel screen repairs . It would appear the better course of action is to go on their website and schedule an appointment. It lets you select the color and everything. In theory, they’d probably do something to make sure parts are on hand to fulfill the appointment.

WTF is the purpose of buying phone insurance if they won’t fix or replace anything? This kind of aggravates me. Seems like if they can’t repair then it should be a replacement for a nominal fee like $50.

Oh I know, and I had called them too. Their site doesn’t really seem to let me know though that they’re out of stock of screens.

As a Pixel XL owner, I’d like to know how you cracked it. What kind of surface did it fall on? Did it hit a corner, edge, flat? Did you have any sort of case on it?

I just went through this with my daughter’s phone. Unlike the iPhone, Samsung phones have the glass bonded to the digitizer, so it has to be replaced as a unit. Same insurance story. Backorder took two weeks. $140 out of pocket.

No case, glass screen protector. Fell from about waist height onto a pebbled sidewalk, must’ve hit right at the edge of the screen. Just bad drop I guess.

Weird, my mom has an S7 and they were able to replace her glass no problem.

I found a couple of places who could order the parts and make the repair, but the cheapest I found wanted $200 and the backorder was about the same.

When you lock your XL does the screen go black and white for a split second? Mine also randomly opens the MotoGP app.

Stock Android has an animation where the screen goes black and white and then compresses towards the middle.

Sad to hear you broke your screen. I came super close to dropping my Pixel in the toilet once. Bounced between my hands and the wall several times before I managed to regain my grip on it.
