well I mean, I was in a situation where i suppose i could have died. On my morning commute this morning the road conditions where not that bad, it was misting and the roads where wet but not extreme by any measure.

Any ways as I’m taking a over pass to merge onto one high way from another (see diagram) my rear end began to slip out on me. Mind you I drive a Chevy Impala, so you know FWD. I tried to correct and my whole car just started to go left and then right. much like an out of control trailer. I attempted to recover and was able to get it some what under control and scrub some speed, I was only going about 50 this whole time. how ever at the last moment my car went into a triple spin and came to a rest facing the wrong way on the high way.

Kinja'd!!!

That being said I didn’t hit the wall, other cars, or anything at all! As well no one hit me! this is why i spend lots of time going into slides when there’s snow on the ground.

Any ways not knowing what happened I called AAA and had my car towed to the garage. I assumed something broke in my suspension. We found nothing! my alignment is even still perfect. the only thing my mechanic and I found were my tires were 5 pounds over inflated. Because I filled them on a day that was sub 30 degrees. other wise everything is in spec!

Best we could figure is maybe there was an oil slick from oil being spilled on the road mixed with the wet conditions just made a little slick. man I tell you though nothing wake you up better than an Adrenalin rush! fuck coffee, haha

could have been an oil slick on the road. Little mist and that oil comes to surface.

Oh man yeah I freaked out after the fact. living in the cold north you get use to sliding around in a car so I’m amazingly composed when it happens. but I wish I had a dash came. I can’t over state how terrifying it was!

yeah that’s the best I can assume. it was a lot like hitting black ice the more I think about it. but not being that time of year you just don’t expect that.

yeah. I spun out in fwd car in snow on straight road. I was so confused and I prayed oncoming cars wouldnt hit me. luckily everyone was paying attention.

I couldn’t figure out why i spun out going steady speed straight down the road. the only thing i could think of is that one of the tires hit more snow than the other... more friction on that side caused the car to spin.

I am sure there is nothing wrong with your car.

there isn’t my mechanic spent 45 min going over my suspension and steering. it’s all in spec. we even checked the alignment it’s spot on. it has to have been an oil slick or something.

I typically drive most cars and trucks 10-15 over the posted corner signs that tell you to reduce speeds for the corners and have had zero trouble. Except the F-350 powerstroke. That truck is twitchy AF. You have to drive the posted speed or it’s loosing the rear end.

A lot of times when the roads are just a little slick, that’s when they’re really the most dangerous. Glad you turned out OK!

There was a local news report last year about front wheel drive cars losing control (losing the back end). The report was indicating putting 2 new tires on the front, and leaving worn tires on the rear is not correct for FWD, and can lead to this kind of situation. I think this is what we see a lot on those Russian dash cam videos of the crap-box Ladas losing the rear.

can you comment on the state of your tires (age/ware characteristics between front and rear)?
