Meet my new home office assistant, Waldo (or “ Wally ” for short, which is not really shorter). He ’ s a 7 - week - old male rescue cat that we found 2 days ago at a vet clinic. They spent the previous several weeks checking him out, weaned him off of a bottle, and treated him for parasites. Now all we have to do is get him neutered in a few months. He ’ ll eventually probably be an outdoor cat, since my wife is mildly allergic and my house gets trashed enough with 2 young kids. Plus, backyard rodent control!

Kinja'd!!!

I ’ ve always had a soft spot for cats because they ’ re so fascinating to watch — seemingly much closer to their wild ancestors than most domestic animals. At the same time, this guy gives us lots of love and purrs constantly, even when he ’ s not asking for food (like so many cats do). My kids absolutely love him and it has awakened some new sense of kindness in them both. It ’ s been really amazing to watch. If it keeps up, we ’ ll probably have a dog (eventually).

And so low - maintenance. Don ’ t take this the wrong way, but cats are like the “ appliances ” of pets. They even potty train themselves.

Needs a red and white hat if you’re going to name him Waldo. Srsly.

Since that’s his namesake, absolutely.

That face just says “I really have no idea who scratched up this rug. Probably the dog.”

Watching animals “stalk” is the best. We’re trying to stop our dog from going after small animals as we now have chickens and ducks.

He’ll see something in the yard, hunker down low, and I can just see all of his senses go crazy. His eyes get big, his nose puffs up, and the hair on his back raises. Then he looks at me like “Dad, you see that thing!? You see it!? It’s in our yard!!! please oh please, let me get it!!!” I love being like “ok pal wait, wait....GO get him!

Now we’ve got to chill him out. At least until he learns that the chickens and ducks are part of the family.

Congrats on your new pal!

Not quite. Just different.

As they say - a dog is a member of the staff; a cat is a freelance.

Pirsig wrote a nice anecdote about welders that could perfectly apply here.

I love the way dogs look back for your approval. Cats are just like “ Finders keepers, mofo! ” except when they ’ re bringing you a trophy back. This little guy is so tiny he ’ ll fit in the palm of your hand, but when he ’ s chasing things, he still does that whole “ crab angle, arched back ” to look big.

You show that balloon who ’ s boss!

Dogs are needy and clingy. My dog loves me. I wish she’d just leave me alone.

It’s always important to give your cat a name...and then refer to it as anything other than its name.

Don’t worry.

The time will come some day when you’ll surely appreciate it.

This from a cat person of many many years who most unfortunately only has dogs now (two, but one is a boxer).

He’s a cute little guy! I wouldn’t trade our cat for the world...I remember when she was that small 2 years ago. It’s doubly humbling for us as she was a 12-wk old Feral, so we had to tame her and then get her used to the house. You definitely build a bond when you tame a feral cat....I am literally her best friend in the world now...
