"How many Chevrolets do you see in Germany?"

Kinja'd!!!

This is a thing our Pompadour In Chief uttered recently : “If you go down Fifth Avenue everyone has a Mercedes-Benz in front of his house, isn’t that the case? The fact is that … there is no reciprocity. How many Chevrolets do you see in Germany? Not very many, maybe none at all, it’s a one-way street. It must work both ways.”

The Donald is in fact correct, you don’t see many Chevrolets in Germany. Maybe someone on his staff should’ve told him that’s because there’s some other GM brand that exists in Germany instead of Chevrolet? Well, at least there was until GM sold it off.

Where you at, Kellyanne?

I’m sure there are Chevrolets there, people are just confusing them as Audis.

Yes, because New Yorkers are boring and bad.

The Chevrolets are owned by American servicemen.

he has a glimmer of a point, though; it seems like consumers in other countries (e.g. Germany, France, Italy, Japan) care far more about buying cars from their own country’s automakers than we do.

we, on the other hand, demand cheap cheap cheap. I sadly believe that if Wal*Mart started selling Geely and BYD cars tomorrow for a few thousand less than everyone else, they’d corner the market overnight.

On a larger scale, it’s pretty simple: Cars designed for European roads and cities can “scale” to US needs pretty easily. The opposite is not often true. The US, Australia, and maybe China are more similar to one another. European cars work everywhere. Well, until they break, which is another discussion.

What a chuffing moron.

Negligible investment in a less lucrative market will tend to produce negligible sales there. How does Mr Trump think it works? We buy your stuff, then magically you buy our stuff to say thanks?

Business deals yes. General purchasing, only in fairyland.

It’s true. Have a look at how many new Chevrolets were sold last year. None (they pulled out of Europe the other year ago or so).

I don’t have detailed market share data by country but really the only markets near-totally owned by local carmakers are Japan and South Korea.

If you go to most of Europe, sure, their local carmakers are popular, and within their respective countries they may have a potentially higher market share than US-based carmakers have in the US.

I think the point he was trying to make was that the German companies should build more cars in the US rather than import them, but he did not properly communicate that.

The reality is the Mercedes factory in Alabama builds the GLE (including coupe) and GLS classes for both the US and export markets, and the C-class for the US. Similarly, the BMW factory in South Carolina is the sole global producer of the X3, X4, X5 and X6. According to BMW , “these vehicles are exported to more than 140 countries.”

So not only are the German car companies building cars in the US, they’re exporting US-made cars just how Trump likes.

Yeah, but the “all, wholesome, American” Chevrolets there are just Korean Daewoos.

And I’d love to see the next Cadillac One be a Chevrolet One instead.

Most of the Chevrolets sold in Europe were made in Korea anyway, aside from the Camaro and Corvette.

I don’t think it’s that they care about buying domestic more than we do. I mean there’s a ton of Japanese cars in Germany/Europe. I think it’s that those other countries are better than us at “cheap reliable appliance” and better at “nose in the air luxury,” so there’s no reason for them to buy American. Plus what we historically do best (big cheap power from a big cheap engine) is both less practical there (fewer wide open roads) and, with many nations imposing a tax based on engine size, less cheap.

‘Cheap European cars’ covers a whole load of countries and brands, which had varying levels of reliability in their cars in each model and throughout history. Saying cheap European cars are unreliable or vice versa would be a ridiculously big generalisation.

They made little to no effort to make a Chevrolet for Europe, they wanted their brand here but nothing on their part to bring more of who they are here.

It’s a lack of experience with the EU market. The variety of EU brand cars available in Europe is immense. Some trouble prone ones, many perfectly reliable.

It’s because Ford does invest in the European market. When you don’t invest in a market you can’t expect to sell much, especially in a market as competitive in the many EU markets.

The cheap European cars I knew best when I lived there were more maintenance intensive (more frequent but affordable and easier repairs). Okay so it needs a window regulator. Easy and cheap. So it needs an alternator. Take it out and have it rebuilt at the neighborhood shop. So it needs a wheel bearing. Big deal. My cars were pretty trouble free once i worked through everything the previous owner neglected.

I wonder if there were some... METRIC to explain why cars for the European market are mostly made in Europe, and some kind of different... STANDARD why the American market (even Mercedes-Benz) would mostly be made in America.
