The SAAB has been off the road for a week due to cooling system problems. I just finished (Well 99% finished) getting it back in order and took it around the block a few times to get it warmed up. The smell was atrocious.

Opening the hood apparently most of the smell was a weeks worth of oil leaking out of the valve covers and unto the exhaust headers and burning off all at once. Normally don’t even notice this because the car gets run every day so only one night’s worth of oil seepage burns off at a time. But seven days worth (which isn’t even that much) smelled like somebody had thrown a porcupine into a kerosene stove.

I’m intrigued and horrified by the imagery throwing a porcupine into a kerosene stove and what that might smell like.

I know that smell. You can’t get new gaskets?

I was initially surprised to find cigarette cartons in the first clean out of my Bronco, because there was no smell. But apparently sitting for months allowed the smell to collect inside and come wafting out as I opened the door. Thankfully I have good old-fashioned vent windows, I found that leaving both open allows sufficient ventilation.

I can, just haven’t had reason to yet. Probably when I get around to adjusting the valves.
