Don't people understand how vacuum cleaners work?

I have picked up numerous vacuum cleaners over the years for nothing or next to nothing, and without fail I’ve gotten them all to work. My favorite for small jobs is a simple 18V Dustbuster that I got cheap at Target because the one that was on sale was out of stock so they gave me a more expensive model:

Kinja'd!!!

The battery on mine wasn’t holding a charge, but I managed to find two of them over at the Goodwill Outlet allowing me to reuse the same charger. Both of them were completely packed with dirt and debris, and both worked fine once cleaned out.

I received one vacuum years ago from my younger sister, a very smart woman. My parents picked it up for her when she moved away to college, and she gave it to me the next year when she moved into a sorority house. She knows I like to fix broken things, so she hoped I could get it working again. The problem? Full bag - that was all. C’mon - it was a reusable bag and could be emptied in milliseconds.

I just don’t get it. Where do people think the dust and debris actually goes? How tough is it to flip that little latch and empty the unit? On the Dustbuster the debris container is clear, so how can you not see that it’s full of crap? Do they think it gets incinerated or something, or does it act like a pump, moving the debris elsewhere. It’s not rocket science, people...

full vacuum bag was the issue? hey, might be worth checking to see if she’s ever changed her oil and if her tyres have any tread.

Yeah, it’s amazing. I’ve fixed a few vacuums here and there, whether it’s my own or someone else’s. My main problem is my girlfriends hair getting caught up in the rollers on my vacuum.

Was using my shop vac last night to vacuum up plaster debris and dust and after a while I noticed suction power was down, this is on a brand new filter. I wonder if I clogged it already. :(

I had a similar pivoting dust buster like that. It was super loud and the battery wasn’t holding much charge. We replaced it with this Shark one that has a brush kinda like a full-size vacuum, which is very useful for sucking cat hair off the comforter.

I had a bike as a kid that my dad and I had pulled out of somebody’s garbage. Problem? Flat tire.

That bike was awesome. 5-speed with a center-mounted linear shifter at the top of the headset. Of course there were other issues, because the kind of people that throw out a bike with a flat tire are the kind that have no idea how to take care of bikes, but most things were just down to my constant use... when I was done with it I’d spent a lot of time wrenching on that thing.

I’m not sure if we still have it somewhere or if we sent it back where it came from. Either way I haven’t seen it in ages and I miss it.

Fine dust like that clogs filters insanely quickly.

I always thought vacuums used the power of mini black holes ready to consume the whole universe if not properly contained......my dog seems to agree with me based on her reactions to them.

People are stupid.

Most of the time loss of suction is down to a full bag or just needs emptied, or has a blockage in the pipe (usually a sweet or small toy of some sort). Clean it out, job done.

Other times it’s because the filter needs cleaning (I usually just use another vacuum to clean it).

I have a Karcher wet’dry vacuum that is a refurb from the Karcher Outlet store for £30 (they retail new at £110), the power is fantastic, but people sneer because it’s a refurb (most of the time they call them refurbs because the box got damaged or dusty and they checked the vacuum before putting it up for sale again).

My wife is awful with the vacuum. She sucks up way too big of stuff until something gets clogged and then just puts up with ineffective vacuuming. Or worse, calls our vacuum bad. Our vacuum Even has a little indicator to let you know how good of suction you’re getting. Although, we have lived in a place with hard floors for 3 or so years, so it’s been less of a concern lately.

I may check out goodwill for a little handheld vacuum the next time I’m there.

If you have an air compressor and can stand the dust, take it outside and blow it out from the inside. Be prepared for a huge freaking mess, but you can get some more use out of that filter.

Fixing and cleaning vacuums is one of those kinda gross but my family is honestly good at things. My dad has an army of Kirbys and I got dysons and roombas for the novelty.

There are places that will rebuild those batteries, even if it’s out of production. I only know of local shops that do it, but that can get you another 5-6 years out of an otherwise decent appliance.

I tried vacuuming my dog as an alternative to brushing her. She doesn’t care, but looks at me with a “what the F*** are you doing” face. Also, it doesn’t really work so well

I don’t have an air compressor (yet), last night I put it in a trash bag and knocked it around on the pavement, it gave me some more use out of it. It was amazing how much dust it was holding, A-mazing. Thing is actually working, haha. I did also run a hose out of the exhaust port so I wouldn’t blow dust back into the house.

Anyway, I did see on the packaging for the filter that it’s washable, I’d just have to wash sometime that I don’t expect to need it soon.

Finally, I’m also thinking a pre-filter may be a good idea.

The trash bag is a good idea. I should try that, as the air compressor method makes a huge friggen mess.

A prefilter is a really good idea for fine dust. It will clog frequently, but it’s a lot easier to clean.
