Kinja'd!!!

My first accident with actual damage. I saw a mangled up ladder in the road and almost hit it. Didn’t register at the time, but that naturally meant that someone else HAD; half a mile down the road, I had a chunk of rubber launched at my car and then ran right over an entire tire. Dashcam video coming soon, and I’ll get better pictures later today.

My front bumper insert is toast, and the rear bumper was also knocked a bit out of place. I heard a bit of metal clunking on my way home, so I think the exhaust might have also been loosened.

I watched as dozens of other cars hit the same tire, littering the highway with debris; one CRV lost its entire bumper cover while I was recording with my phone, so that’s also coming soon.

But anyway, this sucks. I’m on the fence whether I want to report it and collect insurance or not. On the one hand, it would be nice to just get two shiny new bumpers. On the other, I can probably find them used for less than my deductible anyway, and then I don’t have to worry about my rates going up.

The only upside I can see is that I now have an opportunity to get body-color !-trim inserts.

Definitely. I’m just glad it didn’t trigger the airbags.

If you haven’t already, I’d get underneath the car and check that nothing else got mangled

My insurance went down (by like $4 for 6 months, I think, but still) after making an insurance claim for hitting a tire and damaging my front bumper cover and an undertray in my Prius. It was ruled a not-at-fault collision (I would’ve figured comprehensive, but...)

Damn, sorry to hear friend! Glad you’re OK and the Soul seems mechanically no worse for wear....I would get it checked anyway though. A dented oil pan (that could impede proper flow) or something could end poorly in a few hundred kilometres while it seems perfectly fine now!

Find the guy who didn’t properly secure a ladder to his truck, beat him within an inch of his life, then make him pay for your bumper.

That sucks. At least you’re ok. I have 2 similar stories that may make you feel better.

In college, driving home from a friend’s I came around a turn to find a trash bag in the road. I successfully avoided hitting it but apparently ran over a broken jar that nearly perfectly circle punched my front driver’s side tire.

Last year I hit a surprise garbage bag on 316 at around 50 mph and cracked my front bumper. Not really noticeable so I never fixed it.

My friend ran over a tire on the interstate with his Impreza for similar damage. It was close to two grand (front and rear bumpers...)

Fuck ladders. And fuck whoever thinks they are heavy enough to not tie them down in the trucks. Was at work one day and my wife called me frantically. She was coming to an appointment at the same building I work at, and a mile from the office, she ran over a ladder in the road, blowing out the tire on our Jetta. Not really knowing what to do, I called Roadside Assistance with Farmers (which took 20 minutes being transferred around before I finally got a truck) and they dispatched a tow truck driver. Luckily, between the interstate and my office was a Firestone. Not the first place I would have taken it to, but they have deals with my company so I got a discount. Luckily she swerved at the last second so all it did was puncture the sidewall. She didn’t run it over or anything, so the wheel was fine (slight scuff) and the undercarriage was fine. Within an hour or so they had us back on the road. It could have been so much worse though. Who knows how many other vehicles may have hit it or missed it while it was sitting there.

It’s been running fine and going straight, but I might definitely do that.

Not at fault, why would your rate go up?

Yeah, it’s looking a bit expensive here, too. I need both bumper covers replaced as well as most of the trim from the front. (the rear trim is actually okay, but the bumper was perfectly sliced along part of it.)

I’m actually a bit excited, though... My girlfriend cracked the front bumper and the PO of the car apparently liked to drag things out of the trunk and put tons of gouges in the plastic.

Yeah, it’s really terrifying. My first thought after pulling over was, “I gotta get that out of the road before a motorcycle hits it.” There never was a break in traffic, but I also haven’t seen any reports of a motorcycle accident.

But still, I totally agree. A $3 rope and 5 minutes of your day can literally save someone’s life. Fuck anyone and everyone who’s too lazy to bother.

Not at fault, but no one else to blame, either. They’re going to want someone to make up for it.

I don’t think that’s how it works. My co-worker ran into a similar situation, got cut off by a 4-series and he hit his car right into a curb at 3am, mangled a control arm and stuff on his Merc. Asked another friend who worked at an insurance company, said this type of accident would be covered by comprehensive, wouldn’t affect premiums.

Besides, you have a dashcam video proving it wasn’t your fault.

No-fault state? This technically wasn’t a “collision” either.

If you’re not going with insurance, I’d try to get one with fog lights, unless it’s too much of a hassle to wire

I had actually planned on finding some fog lights to try to wire in. Glad I hadn’t already done them, though, since my insurance won’t cover any upgrades even if they’re OEM. Now I’m a bit weary of it, just in case this happens again.
