Kinja'd!!!

Good news! My Cruiser wasn’t stolen! The bad news is that it does have a bent axle. .51 degrees. Rear axle, drivers side...most likely from an accident it had WAY earlier in its life in that corner. I found a place that bends axles but it does make me wonder about the process...anyone have any experience? $90 seems like a great deal for a service like that. Thoughts?

Also, I had a really good Reuben for lunch. No you can’t have pictures. Deal with it. This aint no chicken parm, son.

Also I really like finding good places that are interested in doing quality work, even if it means appointments and driving a little out of the way. They took their time, walked me out to talk about what was going on and made sure I had my options in hand without being all sales pitchy. 10 out of 10 would recommend this alignment shop to anyone, its been my 2nd great experience there.

Sidenote: This confirms my suspicions that I’ve reached my lifetime allotment of COTD and wont be getting any more apparently.

What’s the lifetime allotment? I’ve got 5 so far, and I’m hungry for more.

Sounds like a good shop! So does the axle need to be reinforced after being bent and bent back again?

What part is bent? Is it the axle housing?

Is that at McGeorge Toyota in Richmond VA? I swear I recognize that alignment bay and the haircut on the dude working on it.

If they think they can bend it back into alignment and have a high degree of confidence in the procedure I’d do it. Beats buying a new axle.

I don’t know how many COTD’s a guy can get but I LOL’d when I read that.

They wont do the axle here, the place down the street does. They came recommended by cruiser outfitters so they have some good references coming in. I think they just heat and pull, so no reinforcement is needed. I guess .51 is pretty minor.

Yeah, though it could be the axle stub there seems to be no abnormal wear patterns on the bearings or other issues that make me think it could be the stub.

A good alignment shop is worth its weight in diamonds, and about as hard to find.

Its hard to say how confident they are, but they seemed to act like it was no biggie, do it all the time. The alternative solution is to do nothing but rotate my tires more...thats how minor it is.

My dad and I straightened an axle casing ourselves, once. Considering it was a torch + hammer + cooling cycles sort of process, $90 seems perfectly reasonable.

Well, it’s good to hear that that’s even an option. Do you have to “downgrade” its tow/haul ratings at all, or will it be considered good as new ?

I wouldn’t worry about its payload, I hear from a Toyota engineer these particular axles are rated with a 2.5x static safety factor.

why not just put in a new axle? or is the housing also bent? I just replace bent axels.

05/24/2017 at 17:24, STARS: 0

find me a 95-97 Toyota Land Cruiser e-locker housing in decent shape for a decent price. Its a desirable axle unfortunately and I can’t just swap in a factory axle because I’ve regeared

Kinja'd!!! "TahoeSTi" (tahoesti)
05/24/2017 at 17:28, STARS: 0

You can just swap the gears to the new one......so the housing is bent or the axel? I’m used to ford 8.8s they get put in everything.

Kinja'd!!! "HammerheadFistpunch" (hammerheadfistpunch)
05/24/2017 at 17:30, STARS: 0

Bent housing. I could swap a new housing if I could find one, but its still a grundle of work and the housing would be way more money than straightening it.

Makes mores sense....never heard of anyone trying to just bend and axle shaft back before...house totally makes sense...I’m amazed they can do it without gutting and rebuilding it.

Kinja'd!!! "HammerheadFistpunch" (hammerheadfistpunch)
05/24/2017 at 17:35, STARS: 1

Yeah if it was an axle shaft I would for sure just buy new, this is the housing. They may have to pull the shaft on one side, but I honestly don’t know how they do it....I should find out. If they are heating it with the bearings and seals still in there I don’t want any part of that.

05/24/2017 at 17:38, STARS: 0

Yeah If you remember please report back any findings I’d like to know how they do this without cutting and welding....I guess they could just use something like a frame straightener.

In which direction is it bent? Which is to say are you off .51 degrees of camber or toe? .51 degrees of camber might well not be worth doing anything about out. .51 degrees of toe probably is (especially if it were toe-out).

Kinja'd!!! "HammerheadFistpunch" (hammerheadfistpunch)

That makes sense with their recommendation. You could fix it, or just rotate tires a little more often.

05/24/2017 at 19:18, STARS: 0

Don’t know the danger or success rate, as such. I don’t think there’s any substantial heat treatment of the casing that would be affected in most cases and the metal’s quite thick, so it’s just a question of fiddling with it until its right (or getting it wrong, making alignment worse).

We did it without bearings and seals, of course. If they’re using like a chassis jack to bend it cold, that could work.

where might one procure said reuben? if one were local on the off chance.

also I might not be a genius but bending an axle housing doesn’t seem that big of deal I mean it did get bent to begin with so its just a matter of bending it back. wow this sounds like I am trying to be rude and over simplistic but i aint.
