Removing the bulky rear bumpers, airbox, and widening the sidepod air-intakes. Super excited for 2018, it’s about damn time!

I know, function over form and blah blah blah but you know what? It’s a spec chassis and there’s zero reason for a spec chassis to look ugly.

I’m also hoping that these changes in and of themselves change the risk/reward calculation enough to discourage the contact as an occasional strategy option that has been present in Indycar since they went to current side pods and rear bumpers to protect the wheels. I do give indycar credit for generally getting it under better control this season and the latter half of last year, but the fact that they had to do it via officiating in an open wheel race series always rubbed me the wrong way.

I would be rather surprised if that speedway wing sticks around. That doesn’t look like it would work at all.

I’m surprised they didn’t keep the rear “bumpers”, at least for the speedways. Weren’t these serving a safety purpose?

I think the new car looks great but I have a hard time believing that they’re completely getting rid of the pods behind the rear wheels. Weren’t they implemented for safety?

In the end it seems to easy to just push through the pod and get launched.

Yes but it turns out they were too flimsy, and just left more debris in an accident.

Yea, but they didn’t work.

Fun fact! In the days of the old Dallara, they actually ran positive wing at the Indy 500. The car itself generated so much downforce that they set the rear wing’s leading edge higher than the rear, to reduce downforce.

I believe they still run positive rear wings on the current cars. They certainly look leaned way back.

They very well may, I just wasn’t 100% sure.
