Doo eettt.

Complete suspension overhaul, new drivetrain, uprated brakes, big steelie wheels with those hubcaps, and don’t touch the body. It would be epic.

I think this one goes beyond patina . The last current tag was `1985 and it looks like it’s been sitting there all 22 years hence.

At least. Personally, I thought folks would laugh at that truck. Too far gone to mess with, IMHO. But if you found a serviceable hood for it...

We can reinstall the Adobe stuff next month and look at LR and PS together.

Let me know when you take in the iMac for a heart transplant.

Too far gone?

Oh wait, you live in Cali. :)

On the east coast this would bring some coin. I don’t see a single panel with rust blowout.

It’s a lot more than sanding off paint and letting the metal sit outside for a few weeks anyway.

I wonder what the story is, that truck wasn’t terribly old in 1985, 32 years ago :) I still see this generation on the road up here, but stepsides are pretty uncommon.

If you could get it running, all you’d have to do is slam it to the ground on a set of wide steel wheels to make a handsome profit from somebody seeking instant rat style cred. Hell, you could probably get it into SEMA with a free crate engine. It’d make a hell of a cool Bonneville or nostalgia drag pusher truck with a couple of 2x4's on the front.

If you buy that you need to know this website. You know I can help too, but this will be your bible for many items.

http://www.lmctruck.com/

I can’t recall the formula but the hot-rod guys in Midwest have a DIY mix that looks like oiled rust metal. It resists further rust but looks good on a rat-rod level. Its becoming more the trend around here instead of spending money on a pricey paint job. Out west you guys have more options. Here we have to worry about preservation a bit more.

Not. Buying. That. Truck. But thank you. (And I confess: that statement includes a particle of temptation resistance.)

There is something that I could use your help on: I want to convert the ‘71 Vandura P1500 to power steering. That should be very doable, shouldn’t it? Except for mounting the pump to a 250 straight-six, would the steering gear exchange readily with other vans? Could I take the entire column et al with tilt wheel and so on, and install it in the ‘71?

I found a T5 trans from a ‘93 S10 listed on Ebay in West Virginia. I’ve been bugging the guy there to get me a photo of the front face and the tag. He said that in umpty-nine years in the biz, I’m only the second person to ask about at World Class T5. So I gave him the link to Jay’s Lugnutz/Weebly blog, which is extraordinary...

I don’t think you can restore anything more cheaply than a square body. Stupid cheap replacement panels, plentiful junkyard parts, good aftermarket.

Kinja'd!!! "Dave the car guy , still here" (a3dave)
05/24/2017 at 13:05, STARS: 0

YES , very easy swaps. Look at parts for 250 from any early 70's 250 engine. I quickly looked at the 1973 setup. Your van is actually a G10 or G1500 not a P. The P trucks are cab and chassis or motor home setups. Column and steering gear box from almost any van from late 60s to 8os should work. I’d just make sure to try and buy them from the same van so you get the steering couplers and all. The other consideration is keeping it within a range that the column switches/harness are compatible with your era. You’ll need to look at (photograph) the column plugs. Try to find no later than 1984 with tilt and no intermittent wipers or you’ll be forced to upgrade the wiper motor, etc as well. You might have to anyway or may need to cut and splice some harness. The switches inside the non-tilt and tilt are completely different.

05/24/2017 at 13:40, STARS: 0

I had already assumed that I would need a great many butt splices to connect the horn and such. As long as the turn signals work, everything else can be toggled on the dashboard. In fact, they probably are.

Would the same apply generally to brakes?

Kinja'd!!! "Dave the car guy , still here" (a3dave)
05/24/2017 at 13:50, STARS: 1

Yes, a lot of the brake parts can be swapped between those years.

Kinja'd!!!

mine is quite close to that...... mine is a 77 shortbed, stepside 350 v8 in emerald green........

Kinja'd!!!

mine is a 4x4, manual transmission(sm465), with a np205 transfer case(1.96:1 gear to gear low range) and i have put together a smallblock *cough 305 cough* v8 ready to go into it

Kinja'd!!!

i managed to pick up the truck for right at $500. took me FOREVER and a day to get a hold of it. i had already asked everyone that i knew, and looked in every backyard front yard, barn, garage, outhouse, chicken house, field, and farm, that i could find, for OVER 5 years....... finally asked the right guy. mine has a “fully customized” body(doesnt have a straight panel ANYWHERE, not even the roof. and the interior is GONE, not there. i am going to paint brush it black, like i did the brindle front fender that is going to go on it. it is actually smooth, but it shows the layers.

Kinja'd!!!

that truck that you posted sure is pretty, has some nice straight panels. its a real nice shade of green too. its just begging to get driven....... NICE find......

I don’t think the pump is included, but I also think it’s “Saginaw Type 1,” so should be easy to find a reman somewhere. You think the price point is okay?

I think that truck I posted has been sitting there since 1985. Looks like, anyhow.

Considering the rarity, yes. You might do some quick searches of yards in your area and see if there is a better deal but the chance of nothing else out there is getting high.

Kinja'd!!! "Die-Trying" (die-trying)
05/24/2017 at 16:03, STARS: 1

they are a little TOO proud of that bracket. realistically you can hunt around the junkyards, and pull that power steering bracket off just about any inline 6 that has one on it........

i am going to cheap out, and use the super cheap, super durable, be there FOREVER rustoleum in a can. i am going to more than likely tiger stripe it so that it looks like it has a brindle paint job.

Kinja'd!!!

its going to have 2 or three super heavy coats of rustoleum can black, and two or three layers of gray and brown primer between those. it is going to take about a million years to block sand it back flat, BUT..........THE GLORY.

So if I’m unconcerned about making fancy switches on the column do anything other than turn signal and horn, could I use any column up through 95?

Kinja'd!!! "Dave the car guy , still here" (a3dave)
05/24/2017 at 19:44, STARS: 0

no, newer columns and turn/cruise levers would be more trouble than its worth. Remember the phrase K.I.S.S. ... Keep It Simple Stupid. Its a good philosophy.

Check my Ebay:

http://ebay.to/2rBEJCA

From my parts guy:

PS Pump, $46
PS Gearbox, $127
Pressure Hose, $27
Return Hose, $9

You saw the brackets.

I’m going to stick with the stock column for a while and a more modern steering wheel.
