So my car’s not broken, but I’ve noticed that when I start it after it’s been sitting for more than a few hours (I’d say around 6-8) there’s a mechanical screeching noise for about 20 sec, then it goes away. When I shut the car off I get the same sound very briefly, but it sounds like it’s slowing down now, think a turbine shedding speed. The only thing I can think of is the ABC pump presurising the system, and the forums/Google has been useless. It’s not surper loud, about exhaust level when I start it in my garage, inaudible outdoors, and very loud in the echo chamber of a parking garage. Any ideas ?

sounds like from your description, maybe a belt? But I am assuming you ruled that out already

I replaced the serpentine belt either last year or two years ago, along with the pulleys, so I’m fairly confident it’s not that.

The ABC tandem pump is engine driven and thus would not make noise after the engine is shut off, and tends to make more of a rumbling noise when it’s failing. Does it happen on shutoff regardless of how long the engine has been running? If only on quick cold start and stops, I’d say it may be the air injection pump.

I’ve only heard it happen once, but it could be happening more. It happened after a 30 minute drive and it was fully warm.

Mine won’t be back for at least a month. We just settled so I should get the check to begin buying parts sometime tomorrow. I’m particularly urked because somebody bought the one W220 factory distronic grille on eBay yesterday.
