Me: So, I’ve been thinking that we could probably use a beater truck. Something sorta like this:

Kinja'd!!!

or this:

Kinja'd!!!

My better, wiser, and more self-restrained half: Hmm, we’ll probably need one sooner or later, not a bad idea.

Me:

Kinja'd!!!

My significant other is not only open to this idea, but proposed it without me mentioning it.

Always wanted one and was shocked given her response to other car inquiries in the past.

Not high on the list of priorities unfortunately :(

I hope you’re able to get the Toyota Truck/Hilux. No shame in getting a Taco if you find one at a good price though. I would personally go for a Taco with the 3RZ and a stick.

If your past inquiries were anything like mine, this one is probably 10x more practical and useful.

My wife told me a few years ago that she would like a cheap pickup for hauling her wares to shows and markets. I showed up this:

Kinja'd!!!

350 with a mild cam and straight pipes. She was like, yeah that’s not what I meant.

Didn’t specify what you wanted to haul.

Yup. Apparently I don’t need to buy a 90's project car right now... and evidently, a beat up Toyota from the 90's doesn’t qualify as a project, but is in fact just a giant turd. Also, MR2's look terrible, pop-up headlights are ugly, paying $20k for a 24 year old car that was originally derived from a Celica is dumb, and I don’t need a car that’s quick because I never have time to go to the track.

That’s OK though. I’m just pumped that she’s very much interested in a new 4Runner and that the TRD Off Road is only a $1,250 more than an SR5 - so the fact that I don’t need an electronically locking rear diff isn’t a big deal since it’s only a modest price increase.

That’s how I got my Tacoma.

It helps that I’d had trucks in the past, but we’d been without one for several years. A few discussions about stuff we could do with a truck...then one evening we went out test driving.

Sweet! I’ve been looking at 80's 4runners lately after seeing one at C&C a couple of weeks ago.

First gen Runners are essentially a Hilux with an attached bed and removable topper. If it matters to you, 1985 was the last year of the solid front axle but also saw EFI in the 22RE.

Not suggesting you trade her in, just that she might be having a bit of fun. OTOH, she might be keen to help you test drive and pick something. I had a carbureted Toyota longbed 4x4 in the 80s - I’d suggest looking for the earliest fuel-injected trucks. Easier to replace injectors than rebuild a carb, trust me. Done both.

Yes, I just watched someone tune a 22R. Carbs aren’t bad, but there were more vac hoses and auto-choke solenoids than I could mentally process.

She might be having a bit of fun. She just reminded me that it was “low priority.” /=

I’ve owned a 20R, 22R, and a 22-RE.

If you want something that will never die and don’t use often, get the 20R.

If you want a truck slash DD, get the RE.

Sounds like solid advice. I watched someone tune a 22R this past weekend- so many vac lines. Surprisingly complicated in appearance but just a matter of screws. FWIW, my dad has a forklift with an 18R.

22RE seems to be where its at. Unless... 22R-TE.

It depends on whether or not I decide to sell the Cougar. I just returned from vacation (4400 mile Taco road trip!) so I haven’t given much thought to the next project.

I want it so badly. 288k miles is a fair bit, but not unreasonable. 4x4 would be more useful in Colorado, but they’re prized by the off roading nerds and usually sell at a 2-3x premium. Plus, this one is in damn fine shape for 288k.
