I think I hate my car.

Kinja'd!!!

I’ve been on staycation for 4 days now and I really am starting to think I hate my NC. Not that it matters as I’m still a bit upside down on the loan so won’t be getting anything new for a while anyways. In my defense my circumstances have changed since I got it, I was a hotshot salesman back then with plenty of recreational time and lived closer to the mountains. But now I live farther from good driving roads, work two jobs, spend about 5 hours a day in it and have no time to take it somewhere fun. I hate traffic, I hate commuting, I hate delivering pizzas, and I’m starting to hate driving in general 95% of the time. The ride is awful, the seats suck, it’s not very fast, I never have time to work on it and when I do I can’t bring myself to since my full time job is a Mazda tech. It sucks getting into and out of 20 times a day, driving it too long hurts my knee, and I’m finally ready for an automatic in my life. The best part of my vacation has been knowing that damn car is 20 miles away and not even looking at it for 5 days. Even driving my wife’s base model Kia Rio has been incredibly refreshing, which makes me sad and also makes me hate it that much more. I just turned 29 and finally feel too old to DD a Miata. I’ve decided I want a soul turbo but my wife gets the next new car and mine will have to wait a year or two, so I’m just stuck with it. /venting

I’m sorry. I can kind of relate in that I tested an ND, and loved it, but realized at the same time that it would frustrate me to have to daily it in all the situations I’d need to over time. Hang in there. The day will come...

Why get a Soul Turbo, when you can get a Juke. A NISMO be to harsh for you driving intentions, but a used non-NISMO with a 6spd can be had in the low teens. The engine is pretty good, & very underrated.

I had the same thing. I almost got an S2000 but since hockey sticks don’t fit in it, I ended up in a Jag X-Type Sport. Ended up becoming a father a year or 2 after that, so it worked out.

I’m 34 and sometimes I get irritated commuting around in my lowered, tuned BMW 335xi on all the crappy Wisconsin roads. Especially since my wife’s Subaru Impreza does such a fantastic job riding the bumps that can... upset my car.

But hey, the on-ramp on my way home from work is by a farm, totally deserted, and has no stop sign, and the island in the middle ends early enough that you can apex the turn.

So every night I get to bang a quick heel-toe, apex the turn, and blast up the ramp to merge onto the highway, and that makes me happy.

Very surprised to see a 29 year old Mazda tech already feeling too old to drive a manual sports car. Keep your NC for weekends and get yourself a DD beater box. Early Scion xB should be very cheap. Spend a bit more for a used Cube or Soul. Easy to get in and out of since that’s what you want, but still doesn’t drive like a beached whale like most crossovers.

Juke turbo vs Soul turbo would be a very good comparison for a cross shop. I’d get the Soul since I like the looks better and in one of those awesome color schemes with the white roof and stuff. Looks like a much better looking crossover Mini than the actual crossover MINI.

It’s funny because I cannot imagine dailying any car other than my NB. Sure I could find something else faster and that could suffice but it really is special just driving a Miata all the time. Something about pushing the car to 6k just to drive around traffic, blasting around every turn at wreckless speeds, and putting the top down no matter the weather is just so much fun. My commute is a boring 15 minute jaunt through some mild traffic and yet I still have plenty of fun. I have way more fun when I take the long way home for 25 minutes or so but even on cold rainy days where I just want to go home, I couldnt imagine using any other car.

The only times I have “been upset” with my car have been when something is broken and I cant really drive it. Like massive fluid leaks or other calamities where I am stressed that it will blow up or something. Thankfully Miatas dont have too many of those moments!

The key to happiness is finding that ground where dreams meet reality and can play together nice.

You should get a FiST.

I’ve had 4 Miatas (NA, 2 NBs and an NC). I actually liked DDing the NC most because of the power. But the FiST will give you a lot of that good handling with more power. You can get cars with under 20k on the clock for around $16k. A local guy even got a new one w/ Recaros for about $20k.

Have you driven a Soul Turbo? Do they come with better suspension than the regular Soul?

At the time I was shopping I cross shopped the Juke & Veloster Turbo. Looking now a Soul Turbo up here starts at $26k Vs. the Juke starts at $20.5k. You can also get a manual with the Juke, you can’t with the Soul Turbo up here, but the Soul Turbo has a 7spd DCT Vs. the Jukes CVT. So each has its pro’s & cons.

Was the criterion the ugliest cars?

Yeah at this point the dct is a selling point I’m tired of manuals, before getting my Miata I shopped the gti and st and such but I honestly just want something less sporty now. I prefer the look of the soul and the boxy utility, plus I dig the panoramic sunroof for when I inevitably miss my convertible.

I looked at the fost before getting the Nc but the fist wasn’t widely available yet, I honestly just want something less sporty though. At this point I just want comfortable practicality and decent power. I think the turbo is roughly the same suspensionwise but I’m fine with that, if anything I’ll get an NA or something for a toy.

I drove a Soul for 2 full weeks during my USA West Coast trip and absolutely loved it! Coincidentaly, I had just sold my NB a week before going on that trip and honestly, the Soul was a refreshing change, but I was still a youngster (23 at the time) and longed for a sportier ride. Still, as a DD, I wouldnt say ‘no’ to a Soul.

Yeah my commute is close to an hour of stop and go each way, plus another 4-5 hours of delivering pizzas, so I really don’t enjoy much of it at all, I road rage so hard these days.

Here is what you need to so. Craigslist swap your Miata for a scooter.

I would but cash is hard to come by and I still have like 5ish years left on the loan, and as a mechanic I’m really just starting to hate cars like everybody said I would when I started.

Yeah if you’re looking to get away from stiff suspensions, the FiST isn’t the way to go.

I’ve had mine almost 2 years, and it’s definitely the most fun car I’ve owned. But on rough stuff, the suspension is not very compliant :D

I would like to object getting a Soul. I know 2 people that own one. They’re crappy cars, and both owners hate them. One of them has to be started with a screwdriver, and for some reason they wouldn’t replace the ignition/key cylinder under warranty.

You really do need something more comfortable. I wouldn’t get a Should Turbo though as the suspension is way too harsh.

You just have to drive faster then haha. I have found my car is most enjoyable when I am beating the ever loving daylight out of it. At least then if you break it, you have an excuse to replace it!
