Ahh, the old days of changing long distance carriers every month to get the best rates. And then people from India calling me and I’m like “New long distance carrier, who dis?”

Newman wants you to save big on all your calls. From the brief moment when web sites were a thing, but not everybody had a cell phone.

I just don’t call anyone.

Actually... do you remember prepaid long distance calling cards? For the low low price of $0.35 a minute, you, too can phone home. Man, am I glad the internet is a thing now.

For almost 10 years, I called my parents by using 1800-CALL-ATT and when it said “state your name” I would just say “CALLMYCELL.” Then they would call me back on their fancy, expensive unlimited plan.

I had a calling card. And used pay phones. Those were the days.

That ad was a meme before the internet. Love it.

I remember using that system for cheap long distance back to home (I think it was discounted if you used AT&T for long distance, which I believe we did.) AND for informing people of things using super short phrases. For example, we’d use it from one of three payphones with a code word for each one to request that someone pick us up from one of the closest bus stops to our house (which were all at least a mile away).

What’s funny is that everyone used to do this long before this commercial came out.

I only vaguely remember that era. Roughly 1997-1999? Maybe into the very early 2000s?

I know that by 2001 cell phones were basically everywhere and starting to offer unlimited long distance. I also remember when unlimited long distance on landlines became pretty common (although I can’t remember quite when this was) and it being quite amazing. They still took another 8-10 years to become ubiquitous with practically anyone capable of making a phone call, though.

Telephones were such a scam at every stage until land lines started dying off due to cell phones (which still have a lot of scams, but nowhere near the level of the old landlines and long distance).
