I may be going overkill.

I’m buying a truck. I wanted a Tundra, but can’t find one within 200 miles at a decent price. Those at the 200 mile mark the owners won’t respond to my messages. So, a great deal came up locally.

Kinja'd!!!

I don’t need a 2500. But its cheaper than 1500's with 2x the miles. I don’t want the EXTREMELY thirsty 6.0 but its the card Ive been dealt. I had been debating between trucks:

Tundra 05-06: perfect, but way overpriced.

F150, 04-06: awesome, but those damn cam phazers.

Ram 02-06: shitty interior and transmissions. But Hemi, yo

Silverado: amazing drivetrain, the rest is shit. And RUST.

right now it looks like an 04 Silverado 2500 LS 4x4 is my next toy. Maybe.

EDIT: while the seller and I were finalizing price, he had someone there to show it and sold it. Fucker didn’t tell me until it was gone.

Given the choices I’d do the same

I’ve always thought the 3/4 tons were a punishing ride compared to the 1/2 ton trucks. I had wanted an F250 because I thought they looked cool until I drove one.

I thought the GMT800 was pretty well screwed together. Rust seems pretty common though.

Been keeping an eye out for a basic v8 1500

Try searching 50o miles out, or save a while longer for that Tundra.

I’d suggest the Sierra, better looking and same drivetrain. Also maybe because I live in the rust belt but no truck from any era is safe from rust. Rams these years are bad in the fender wells and f150s are cab corners (but they are way better off than the other 2).

Newer looking tires, too. The GMT800 will last forever, good find. Do it. (Not as thirsty as the 8.1, so count your lucky stars)

That 6.0 seems to be way thirstier than it should be. Most comments I see about the 6.0 say it’s not much better than the 5.3 (power wise)and you might as well get the 8.1 with only a 1-2mpg penalty compared to the 6.0.

I think that I have voiced my opinion of GM a few times on here, so it’s fairly well known that I am not a fan, but I’m a believer in the 6.0.

If it’s not completely swiss-cheesy then this seems like a hell of a deal, even if it’s more truck then you need. It will certainly do what you need it to do, and then some.

My uncle bought one of these brand new. He has beat the hell out of it on his farm since day one and it seems to have held up quite well. This is a very good buy in my opinion.

I think it depends a lot on the wheel base. The longer wheel base trucks smooth out the ride considerably in my opinion. I have a ‘93 F150 extended cab short bed, it rides rougher than the ‘01 F350 crew cab I test drove the other day.

I learned to drive in one of those but with four doors and a lift.

I’m really good at parking.

I was in the same boat as you. Bought my father-in-law’s 05 1500 Z71 ext cab a couple months ago. I was eh about it originally but I’m really starting to like it.

The 6.0 MOVES. Check the gear ratio, probably has 4.10s. Your MPG won’t be that bad, prob 10-12 around town, 18 on the highway depending on the gearing. I’m getting 15 around town and doing my first long trip this weekend and expect 19-20 MPG.

Check for rust on the rockers, the lower INSIDE of the doors, and make sure those suicide doors latch well. Also, brake lines tend to rust out on these things quick too. Dorman makes literally every single part on these trucks from brake lines to steering wheel buttons so don’t fret the small stuff. Get in the truck make sure it shifts hard and quick, no weird vibrations, or top end ticking/tapping etc.

I disagree and feel the opposite. My buddy’s 2500HD crew cab is a LOT faster than my 5.3 (he has 4.10s, too) and the fuel mileage hit is only 2-4 MPG

I used to borrow my father in law’s ‘96 F250 4wd crewcab longbed on occasion. Unloaded, that truck sucked on the highway!

I have an 06 Silverado and think that’s a great deal depending on how it’s equipped. Rust is common with them, and it seems to spread pretty quick once it starts, but that one looks like it may be good. Mine has always been parked outside and driven in Ohio winters with zero rust on the body. I used POR15 on the frame when it started showing surface rust.

Check the brake lines. If they’re rusty the parts are cheap but due to the routing they are a pain to replace.

Also, they have issues with the evap canisters in the fuel system. If someone habitually tries to get to an even dollar amount at the pump gas gets into it and messes up the vent solenoid. They can be in three different locations; two are a 15 minute job to replace and the third is easiest to do if you tilt the bed to the side to access it. The part itself is about $20 or you can do a retrofit that is less likely to fail that costs $200 and requires lowering the transmission to install.

First off the gearing helps, it’ll make the truck quick off the line.

And I can’t say I’ve driven trucks with either engine, but most of what I’ve seen seems to be that the 6.0 is not worth it. To get the 5.3 if you don’t need to haul much and get the 8.1 if you do. Again, that’s just what I’ve seen, I haven’t driven either one personally.

I think the OBS Fords just rode rough in general too. Going over a bumpy road makes it feel like my truck is going to get shaken apart. It’s bad. I haven’t driven any F250/F350s from that era, but my F150 rides worse than most 3/4 or 1 ton trucks I’ve ridden in.

Well, yea. 4.10s vs 3.42 makes a difference. But the 6.0 truck has a lot more balls. I own the 1500 and have driven the 2500 many times.

Under $5k for that? Do it. We had one of those but with the longer cab, for a work truck at a marina. I drove it a lot, and loved it. We also had an ‘07 Tundra that I couldn’t stand as a work truck. Too many nannies, the dings and beeps you’d get for moving the truck 5 feet without your seat belt on, leaving the keys in it when you open the driver’s door with it RUNNING, WTF.

Nice truck, do it.

edit: I’ll add that a co-worker has one near-identical to the one in your picture, and rolled it onto its side recently after hitting black ice. He climbed out, totally fine. Put a new bed (used) on it, a new mirror, and it’s all good. You’d never know it rolled.

Expect it to need new idler and pitman arms to drive decently down the road. GMT 800s (especially the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks) tend to eat idler and pitman arms every 50-60k. The good news is that they are not nearly as prone to eating bushings and ball joints as the GMT 400 trucks (which also eat idler and pitman arms, too).
