Kinja'd!!!

On my morning drive, I pass an old farm property that’s being overhauled. It’s endless entertainment seeing what they’ve done every day. I have no idea what the new owners intend to do with the property, but they already put (my best guess) $300k into ONE of the barns, and not even the really big one - that one hasn’t been touched yet - so I can only imagine what their budget might be for the house. So far, they ripped off the front porch and side “garage” structure, lifted the whole thing and put a proper foundation under it, totally gutted the interior down to the studs, then the roof came off.

After building a proper third floor on top of the now-roofless house, one day the gable ends popped up as you see in the pictures, along with two dormer ends. When that all appeared, it confirmed that they are adding living space on that floor, with the raised roofline in the back, and dormers up front. However, after a few days the gable ends came back DOWN, although it coincided with a very windy weekend in the forecast, so I wondered if they were just worried about the wind ripping those ends off without the rest of the roof in place, or even just a main roof joist.

But no. A week passed before they went back up, and sure enough, you can see why they came down in the first place. I’m sure the eagle-eyed (or even, non-blind probably) among you can spot what they did. They also appear to be uncertain about the placement of the dormers, because they’re still just kind of sitting there, not lined up with anything. If I were the homeowner, I’d be concerned. OR, the contractor is dealing with a very indecisive client. Anyway I can’t wait to see this all come together. Today they were joining those ends with a gigantic LVL, so I expect a roof in the near future.

Sorry for the single crappy potato pic...

UPDATE: We have a winner already, WilliamsSW noticed the roofline changed... for some reason. I will attempt to find an answer, some day.

Waiting for the eagle eyed viewers to chime in as I am apparently blind.

Those huge dormers, just as huge asymmetrical gable, and apparent boxed eaves aren’t what one would call architecturally sympathetic for what looks like a building from a ways back into the 19th century. I’d hold out and wait for some brick veneer (better if not on all sides) and vinyl siding for the complete middle American tract house look.  But it’s not my money.

Yeah, I am hoping it comes together somehow, but it’s not looking great. Those dormers are gigantic. Maybe they’ll be smaller next week, lol

Wait, so the gable ends went up a foot or two, right? I’d love to know the story there...

Why would they make the front of the roof so steep if they are building a new roof. Don’t understand the asymmetry either.

Perhaps with a bit of fake stone and some ionic columns to hold up the porch?

Yeah, it’s looking a bit disjointed so far...

ding-ding-ding! Yeah, they changed the roofline both front and rear for some reason. I’d love to stop one day and ask. This is the kind of thing where if I pull up in my truck, I could probably legitimately start a conversation about it; if I pull up in my little BMW wagon that I actually drive every day, I’d probably be met with suspicion immediately. It’s crazy but also true. Some time I’ll be going by in the truck when they’re working, and I’ll stop.

I’m at a loss on that - it may be a coin flip between an indecisive owner and a screwup on someone else’s part. With multiple options on the screwup scenario. I’d love to find out, though!

looking at the new rake profile and the existing window casings, I’m guessing this house used to be very nicely designed, and now it is going to be large. It kills me when people just dump all their money into SQ FT and don’t save any room for finishing the details correctly.

Only if the columns are foam, and really thin, for the chicken legs look.

I don’t suspect this will be pretty to those of us with an eye for detail.

Nope, not a chance, unless the dormers and gable ends come down again and are replaced with something completely different, as a start.

Hopefully the roofline will change, too. That high-in-the-back thing always bugs me.

That whole 3rd floor appears to be kludged together in a desperate attempt to maximize floor space while perhaps staying within a max height limit, and maybe (just maybe) trying (and failing) to make the front of the house still look decent.

Yeah, attractive farmhouse to misshapen house thing. What bugs me is that they are spending a ton of money to keep the original house vs. just tearing it down to build a standard neo-eclectic suburban (this can’t be cheaper). That means they wanted to keep the original character of the place, but someone in the process felt that this monstrosity would fulfill that goal. I hope it’s the owners with no taste, because I’d feel really bad for them if someone roped them into this shit.

It would be less offensive if it wasn’t so visible from the road. High in the back when you can’t see it anyway? Eh. But where it totally changes the visible profile of the house... yeck.

If they wanted a cool and very large house, they should have made the gigantic barn into living space. I’ll post a pic of that when I get a chance....

guessing there is an odd staircase up to what used to be attic/kids room, and think shit we can’t have the entrance to the new master bed/bath/walk in closet floor.
