How cheap/easy is it to re-veneer small furniture? Like a little night stand?

Because I just bought 90% of the furniture for my new apartment and the avg cost of each piece was about the same as a 6 pack of decent beer. That being said there is veneer to be fixed and vinyl to be sewed! Not because I “need” to, but just because. All those little things add up and make your place look like a dump. But if you fix a bunch of small easy stuff, then you look like a sophisticated, cultured, and discerning young adult.

Just kidding it’s just something I’ll work on when I’m bored.

Edit: Forgot to add. Can you paint veneer or no? If so, is there a particular type of paint you should use?

It’s pretty easy to make it look OK at a glance. It’s very difficult to make it look like it was never messed up.

Rub a walnut against it. It won’t do a 100% job but it will make it look a little better.

Pretty easy, but very hard to match.

I’m assuming doing a “patch” job would go along the lines of removing the rest of the strip and replacing it with the closest match?

Also what if you redo the entire thing? Is consumer grade veneer not as long lasting or inferior in some other way? Since most of my furniture is really small, because my second criterion after being cheaper than a pack of cigarettes was; how easy will this be to move?

with the drawer you might be able to peal that broken peice off and replace it but good luck getting the colors to match

If the rest of the strip will peel off, yeah. Otherwise you can custom cut a patch to fill in the rest, and just try your best to stain it to match.

For the gouges on the outer case, I’d get one of those finish crayons and just color that back in.

If you go for a full strip and refinish, you’re in for a crap-ton of work. You could spend an hour or two on a patch and blend job, and it’ll look pretty good. A full strip and refinish is easily 10-12 hours worth of freaking drudgery.

Just find a way to make it smooth then paint. The “dipped” mcm furniture is pretty in right now and it’s one of those styles that is simple enough that it should look fine forever.

You might be better off sanding it smooth and then just painting it; it’s not exactly bird’s eye maple so nothing of real value will be lost. Also consider getting new pulls/knobs to give pieces your own style.

Yes! I love it when fashion coincides with my lazy/cheapness!

Hopefully that’ll keep me occupied enough so that I don’t start modding the Integra! :)

My uncle used to own a high end furniture repair shop, (pianos, antiques, etc, etc.) You can work magic with filler and a little artistic work with a paint stick to match the grain. Glue, clamp, fill, sand, paint stick, re-varnish.

If it were me, I’d peel off/sand the veneer and paint. You could peel off and replace and stain but it takes more time than paint. I would suggest painting the table one color and then a different color for the drawers. Replacing the knobs can really change the look too

That’s what I’m thinking. My apartment could use a little less BROWN BROWN BROWN!
