Kinja'd!!!

I bought this under the impression that either the head was cracked, or the head gasket was bad, probably. I can’t find anything to suggest that either is the case. Aside from it making it over the Coquihala summit without overheating, the oil doesn’t look milky, and the coolant level is perfect. I haven’t done a compression test, but I don’t see any real reason to. It feels low on power, but it’s hard starting and idling like the timing is off and/or the spark plugs need changed. Maybe a vacuum leak, or several, there’s a lot of possible places for vacuum leaks. Maybe I’m speaking too soon, but right now I’m feeling like this was a better deal than I thought. I gave her a good wash and vacuum today, pictures to come later.

Those were just low on power from the factory.

Have I got a podcast for you. 4 cylinder Raider/Monteros are high on charm, but the G54b can be fickle. If it doesn’t have an OEM all brass radiator, find one. The plastic ones can burst and ruin your day. The stock carbs with all the emissions crap are garbage. If you don’t need to pass smog where you live, toss a genuine weber on there. The truck will never be a powerhouse but it will run better. Finally, go seek out the Montero USA owners group on FB and the https://www.adventuredrivendesign.com/forums/index.php forums for lots of like minded folks. Basically, every issue with these trucks as been solved at some point. The answers are all out there.

It looks like an all metal rad to me, probably original. I’m aware of the lameness of the stock carb situation, a Weber swap is definitely in the cards for this thing. I didn’t know about either of those pages, thanks!

Shameless plug, but we talk a lot about old Mitsubishis here.

May I suggest that you get the coolant tested for exhaust, might be that exhaust gasses are getting pushed into the coolant. It’s around $50 kit you send away for testing.

I might try that, a friend of mine even has one of the kits I think. Still, the two cars I’ve been around that ha that problem, both overheated and overflowed their coolant if they ran for more than 15 minutes or so.

You guys want to take about an old Dodge Steath ChumpCar? Rebuilt from a donor $500 Craigslist 1991 Stealth Base with 220k miles and a very blown head gasket. Races like a champ now.

If I was gonna dive into an engine swap, I’d probably go for a 4BT....
