Antiques, land yachts, and the loudest car I've ever heard in person, a CTS-V track weapon (video after the jump).

Kinja'd!!!

Yesterday’s Cadillac show was way more diverse and exciting than I expected it to be. Of course, there were loads boats and a handful of prewar cars, but interesting modern stuff showed up too, from Hennessey HPE cars to a brand new ATS-V. I also shot a quick video of a this insanely loud, back firing CTS-V race car:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I don’t think there were any mufflers on this whatsoever. It was glorious. There were other V cars there too, even a wagon!

That’s the end of the modern stuff. Here are the boats, starting off with a glorious portrait of vintage Cadillac owners in their natural habitat:

There were a handful of early 20th century cars around. The owner of this ancient thing had a unique setup under the hood; triple carbs from an old Chevy pickup. He said the old flathead had major vapor lock problems before that modification was made. The car also had a really unusual suspension damping setup. Hydraulic pistons limited the motion of a series of levers that were attached to the front axle.

Here are a few interior shots, starting with the surprisingly spartan cockpit of this blue roadster:

Watchlopnik: I learned from the owner that the “Jaeger” clocks you see in vintage cars like this one were indeed made by the company now known as Jaeger-LeCoultre, a high end (4-5 figures) Swiss watch manufacturer. I’ve always wondered if that was the case and I’m glad I finally asked.

As far as I’m concerned, the interiors of sixties and seventies Cadillacs are just as much fun as the exteriors. They’re totally insane. The fabrics are wild, the dashboards look like they belong in a spaceship, and they all have massive chrome plated trim pieces everywhere.

As always, the parking lot at these shows is also interesting.

Yesterday’s show was the first of many lawn events at the Larz Anderson auto museum in Brookline, MA (Greater Boston Area). There’s a different show every weekend from now until late October. Next weekend is member car day, which should be like cars and coffee on steroids.

Even cars like the Peugeot 205 came with Jaeger instruments.

I believe the blue one is a ‘29 Cadillac Convertible Coupe (v8, obviously). It’s not the Fisher version because they have a different grill. The red one is, of course, a La Salle, which is *kind of* a Cadillac.

I’m gonna try to be much better about documenting these shows this year.

Yeah I’ve noticed them in less prestigious cars too, must’ve been an entirely different division or something.

Yeah I was pretty confused about the whole La Salle thing...

I like race cars, and I like Cadillacs, but man oh man that race car feels so obnoxiously out of place here among all that beauty and class. Nothing wrong with Caddys having some performance under the hood, but it’s best left low-key, I think.

Well, kind of like how Lincoln and Chrysler tried to go up-market and hive off higher level sub-marques with Continental and Imperial, Cadillac tried to go down-market with LaSalle and others . Only one of their companion makes succeeded, and it’s because cheap car customers are surprisingly choosy. The whole “make a cheap version” thing was kind of like modern Toyota designing their platforms bulky from the start to build a Lexus - it’s easier to de-content a fancy/heavy built car than build a high dollar car from one that doesn’t have the right bones.

It would be fun to take that first car, the light blue aircraft carrier, and install a 1,000 horsepower engine.

Thank you but next time will be much better!! This was done with my S7, real camera from now on! Sticking my arm through peoples windows for the interior shots was a little awkward...

It seems to be a theme with these shows, there’s always the one guy who brings an insanely loud race car. Everyone crowds around and gets excited, it’s fun. I get what you mean though!

I’m thinking that wagon with all the flake in the paint is probably Thunder Gray ChromaFlair, which is OEM...fantastic OEM.

Ah ok thanks for the explanation! The market sub dividing is always so nuts. Sound like La Salle = a Skoda (another brand I don’t understand)

Agreed! I’ve always wanted to do something similar. It’d be especially amusing in sedan format. A 572 would be nice and I’m sure it’d fit.

Yep it was a totally nuts amount of flake, that wagon had more of it than all of the custom jobs at that show. Props to Cadillac for keeping things interesting.

Skoda: a bunch of Czechs who like to build things out of Volkswagen parts and Volkswagen is okay with doing that. As opposed to SEAT, which is kind of like a Volkswagen factory in the third world and one in Europe at the same time.

Yeah, they’re both super-cool, but part of me still can’t get used to seeing the Cadillac brand on a race car. It’s so wrong! LOL
