Painting your taillights black makes them hard to see?

Oddly (!?) only at night...

It’s like they think the tail lights are the only thing visible to other people and the entirety of the car is hard to see in broad daylight as opposed to at night.

That’s some Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal-level stupidity.

(It’s so stupid that it assumes that if you can’t see it, it can’t see you.)

I’d really love to see (someone else set the precedent) of crashing into someone with tinted tails and then be found not at fault.

Same for garbage cars with half a working brake light. I smash into you, its your fault! but... I suspect arguing and winning that point would be a severe pain in the arse.

I’d like to see that too, just to drive home the point of how much of a bad idea it is to darken them.

But then again, I don’t want to reinforce the idea that brake lights are the only way to tell that a car is slowing down. I mean, there’s nothing hiding how far away the car ahead is. Brake lights are a (much appreciated and beneficial) redundancy to what is so obviously happening.

The driver in front shouldn’t be doing any hard braking, nor should his car’s brake lights be dim. And the driver behind him should always be paying attention and maintaining a reasonable following distance. This overlapping effort from both parties should be  more than enough to prevent a collision.

But I’d still like to see an object lesson about dim lighting be put forth as a PSA or something. Maybe the best example would be under foggy conditions?

UGH. Seen too many threads like this on Charleston Car Meets. Who the fuck thinks “You know those bright red things on the back of my car that light up and tell the people behind me that I’m slowing down or stopping so that they don’t crash in to me? I really think I need to paint those black...” Maybe they just hate their car enough that they’re hoping someone will plow into the back of them and total it so they can get the insurance money?

IIRC, the person blocked in blue is from the Charleston area.
