One of these things, confirming the status of France as one big open air motor museum.

I’m gonna go ahead and guess that there is a 100% chance that this picture was taken in Bretagne lol

We parted one of those out a few years back. It took about 20 minutes to have the complete front end (bumper, lights, wings, hood) removed. it was perfect to work on

Yeah, I actually wanted to say there was a 100% chance that it was in Illes et Vilaine too but didn’t want to take the risk haha

During our largest classic car show, I saw one rough looking 18 in the parking lot. It had some “Tour de France” decals and it was carrying a vintage French bicycle on the roof rack. I have a picture, but not with me currently.

When in college I drove on of these for a few months. Exact same color. Exact same non-existing shine. Exact same beige interior. I moved a bag of concrete dry mix in it but the thing was full of holes so after a pretty heavy rainfall the somewhat tore bag got all soaked up creating a pretty straight concrete floor in the trunk. From that moment on every car accommodating on the road at night gave a light signal for my beams pointing all the way into their face. Epic times. What a car.

With some of the cars you select I something think it might be more due to the Irish tendency of disposing cars prematurely (?). This type of Renault however is something I haven’t seen in a very, very long time.

Also, 3 bolt wheels on a car that (relatively) large.

These were actually sold in Murka for a few years during peak malaise. I doubt the ownership experience helped the brand remain viable.

Les Laguna comme ça, elles sont partout. Les 505, malheuresement, sont (sauf les vôtres...) disparu.

They used to sell a model called the 18 American which was American spec in so far as it had the same colour scheme and wheels. Not the sealed beams and battering ram bumpers obviously.

I prefer to call them park benches. I bet they could take a bump, and I bet depreciation on these things was catastrophic. Haven’t seen one in probably 15 years.

I’ve driven one (R18 automatic, it was a specific model as per Renault policy of the time) in the distant past. It went well enough as I recall.

Other than the most recent - 5, 19 and 21 - you don’t see numbered Renaults even in France now.

I had hoped something interesting like a DS might appear but they’re too old - and worth too much - to be daily drivers. Plenty of 2CVs though.

I think those were sold on this side of the pond for model years 1980-83, maybe some into 84. The complex shape of the fuel filler flap catches my eye. I am sure for the time, they weren’t particularly bad.

We also got the Fuego, an 18 wagon, and of course the 5/LeCar.

Oddly, you also got four studs per wheel.

I am pretty sure the average North American car shopper in 1980 would have freaked out over only 3.
