I’ve only had my license a bit over 3 years and in that time I’ve already had 4 cars. Two I drove for less than a year a piece. I might have a problem with commitment?

Kinja'd!!!

The Safari I drove for 10 months, the M3 for a year and 5 months, the S10 for 10 months, and now I’ve had the Silverado for a little over a month.

I’m tied to the Silverado until the loan is paid off (well, not really but I’m forcing myself to keep it until then) so that’s gonna end up being my longest owned car by years when it’s all said and done.

I also did the math, and the Silverado has cost more than my other cars combined by a few thousand dollars. Which makes sense since its the only one that was more than $4500.

So yeah, this is what I think about when I’m bored on Sunday evenings.

Well, you certainly upgraded each time (Safari to M3 and S10 to Silverado). :-)

I’ve had my license 11 years this month (wow, I feel old) and I’ve had 4 cars counting my 6 that I have now. I had the 3 longest, at 6 years. But that’s how long the loan on my 6 is, so I’ll have it that long too.

Commitment issues? Tell me about it, haha.

Do you miss driving manual with the S-10 though?

No, you just haven’t a good car yet. When you have one you won’t want something else.

Hell, a nice bicycle would’ve almost been an upgrade over the Safari!

I’m tied to the Silverado for 5 years at least. Most likely less becuase as soon as college is said and done I’m paying extra on it. Not that I plan on getting rid of it the second it’s paid off though.

Not the slightest. The gearbox in the S10 wasn’t exactly the best, plus my commute is literally all stop and go. It got old. I’ll definitely have another manual car (hello, not beat E36 M3) but it’ll be a weekend toy.

True. The M3 was almost the one but the body had such bad cancer I couldn’t keep it long term and drive it everyday. The Silverado is my favorite car I’ve owned by incredibly large margins though so its probably it.

I’m so used to stop and go traffic with manual cars. Every single car I’ve owned has been manual and driven daily in stop and go traffic. Only time I drive auto is with work vehicles and it’s weird.

I remember hearing somewhere that 4 years was the average time owners held onto a car. I don’t know if that’s still true, but I’m averaging about 2-3 years per car.

I’m still baffled we sold that thing for $1800. I’m curious if it’s exploded on the new owners yet.

4 years seems awfully short. Of course, I’m the outlier in my family, which keeps their cars typically 10 years or more.

It has a 4.3, so it likely fell apart around that.

That’s pretty good!

My Mustang is coming up on it’s 8-year anniversary with me, and I have NO plans to get rid of it anytime soon. The shortest I’ve owned a car was -I want to say- about 11 months, so it kinda balances out.

I’ve owned three cars now (that I call my own) in the 32 years that I’ve had my license. My first I got when I was 20. I bought two others for my wife since we’ve been married.

I’ve been driving 16 years, and have owned/own 14 vehicles. 11 of those I owned for less than 15 months. Out liars = STi (6 months), E46M3 (10 years and counting). 5 Fords, 2 M3s, 2 Subarus, 1 VW, 1 Mazda, 1 Nissan, 1 Audi, 1 Honda...and a partridge in a pear tree.

I’m just now learning that I’m better off only buying cars that I will keep “forever” if I have to have something fancy and new going forward, I’ll lease it.

I’ve had my license 29 years. I’m on my 27th four wheeled vehicles. Nine or ten bikes. My plan was to keep the Taco 10 years, but I’ve already got a wandering eye.

You are right. I’m sorry to say, generally car enthusiasts wouldn’t consider any of the cars you’ve owned “great” or “cool” cars/trucks. Once you get your dream car, a reasonable dream car that you can afford that is, you will want to keep it longer since you have more of an emotional attachment and it speaks to you. I mean, you are doing great staying away from the super boring models though my friend! (Toyota Camry, Corolla, Prius; Mazda 3, 6; Honda Civic, Accord, etc etc).

Get a classic car. Something pre-1977 is best. They are easy to grow emotionally attached to because not only you will like it and its personality (some classics have so much patina and character, they are like dogs or people), but other people around you can/will grow attached to it to. My 1972 Buick Electra literally has what I call “colds” and it has what I call “good days”. It will make a noise for a week or two, then stop for no reason and not come back for 4 months. Or it will have a small part fail, you fix it, and then its a different feel. It’s behaviour is so dependant on how you treat it. It’s like getting a trusty dog that leads you through situations and stories. You will want to keep it for more than a year for sure if you invest your heart in it.

I mean don’t feel bad... if you want to talk about commitment issues...

I’m 24 and just counting from when I got my license when I was 18 and vehicles I’ve actually registered and licensed I’ve had 10 vehicles & 3 of those I had for 2 years each

1976 Chevy k10- 2 years

99 Silverado 2500- 2 years

06 Silverado z71 - 8 months

84 Buick Regal- 1 year

02 Sierra z71- 2 months

01 Duramax- 2 years (RIP)

94 GMC k1500- 2 months

99 Silverado Z71- 3 months (currently own)

97 Chevy k1500- 2 months (currently own)

74 Chevy c10- 1 year (currently own)

Plus another 6 that I never registered and another 2 that I had before I had my license

So That’s 10 drivers in 6 years and 18 total vehicles in 8 years.... the majority being GM pickups lol

I don’t have much history (1 vehicle) that I’ve had for 2-1/2 years but when I got it I was fully prepared to be swapping it for something new sooner or later. That hasn’t happened. I have no plans to get rid of it in the foreseeable future. It really has grown on me.

I’d say if you haven’t formed an attachment with anything you got rid of you don’t have a problem. Yet...

I’ve owned 4 cars in the 15 years I’ve been driving. Still have two of them - my daily driver (08 Accord) I’ve owned for 3 years and my truck, which was originally a daily driver for 6 years, I’ve owned for 13 years. The others were 2 years (93 Protege) and 4 years (06 Jetta TDI) of ownership.

So I guess that 4 year average applies for a daily.
