I told my friends over a few beers how I was in the long process of window shopping for my wife’s next car. One of their faces lit up as she said, “You wanna drive mine?” Well I never say no to a test drive.

(Context: I have previously posted “anti-positive” things about the Crosstrek on OPPO.]

Kinja'd!!!

Hers was that odd color: that satin pearl metallic. Which I think looks amazing, actually. Her interior was of grey seats with the orange stitching. Nice touches all around.

Anyway, the drive: The steering was easy as pie, but not slushy like my Tacoma. The seats were very comfortable, and the visibility was no worse than any other new car. It’s also much faster than it looked. When I asked it to move through town in a clip, it did not disobey. They also let me park it in their incredibly narrow garage. No problems.

Adding more from a passenger’s POV, the backseats have ample leg room and I did not feel impoverished.

The one concern I have with this thing is the cargo capacity. It’s just a lifted Impreza hatch after all, so it has but 3 more cubic feet than my wife’s Pontiac Vibe. I feel that could very well be a deal-breaker for her. Why she wants so much space, I can’t say (*cough* children).

Anyway, I liked the Crosstrek quite a bit. I’m a believer now, and it’s plain to see why they are more common around here than even Camries. Of course, this is Subaru country.

If you want more trunk capacity, then go with the Outback wagon or the Forester.

If it was me, I’d go with the Outback Wagon.

Depends on the frequency of having small humans and the gear they require to have while toting.

Our equinox was fine with 2 kids 2 years apart, but my wife was moving more children that are not our own and we bought a van.

With kids, more space makes for easier packing for equipment. For up to 2 children this would be ok. More than that, and you’ll need a 3rd row plus storage.

Kid seats don’t do well 3 wide.

In that case, I think width is more important than height. Since you already have the tallest dog in the universe. At least in our timeline....

My sister in law just bought one and they’re quite quick. I thought the rear cargo area would be bigger.

My wife really liked the crosstrek, but then we went to go look at one and realized how tiny they are. Not to mention at our elevation the 2.0 REALLY struggles. They would be okay for kids up to 2...until they start school or you need to cart around carpool people or friends, but they sure are tight. I wish the Outback sport would make a comeback. A true Impreza wagon with the 2.5 would be ideal...not the new crosstrek without the armor thats coming

Kinja'd!!!

psss, subaru...wagons are bigger than hatches. Hell, they are bigger than the sedans they are based on! This is 7 inches shorter than the sedan on the same wheelbase. WHY?!

I enjoyed driving one but its just quite big enough with the kiddo tax, I much preferred the Crosstrek to the Forester but the interior space difference between the two is supremely noticeable.

Thats the gist of it. Why don’t more car makers offer in seat boosters? Solve so many problems and boost sedan and wagon sales.

My brother owns one exactly like what’s pictured with the grey seats and the only gripe he has is that the rear view mirror is right in the way of visibility on the windshield. But either way he loves it.

Compared to, what, a 1990 Yugo? The Crosstrek is the most painfully slow thing I’ve ever had the displeasure to get as a rental.

I’m not sure why anybody would buy one of these over a Forester. They’re like the same ish.

thats my 2 cents. mainly the highway mpg, but frankly not worth it. Especially considering you can get the turbo in the Forester.

We managed to haul two little ones around in a Neon for about 10 years.

A Crosstrek would have been a huge step up.

When I had one as a loaner I thought it was kinda fun, my biggest complaint was the CVT. I’m gonna echo what others said here, the Forester would probably be the one to get. Very similar footprint, but the Forester has so much more room, especially cargo room.

It really is. They need a tweener wagon. All they had to do was keep the length of the sedan for the 5 door... But nooooo

I didn’t hate it. I always prefer an manual or auto over a CVT, but I’m sure my wife wouldn’t care

Well she drives an auto Vibe (138hp [BLATANT LIES]) and I drive slow things. So speed is not a concern.

Yeah the cross trek has no trunk, I would get a forester if one kid is planned or an outback for two kids. The forester based on the same platform actually drives really well and has Gibbs more cargo room.

My wife drives an Impreza hatchback because both she and I dislike the extra body cladding and ride height of the Crosstrek.

It’s not fast but I actually feel like the CVT is a benefit in getting up to highway speeds. Unlike the dreadful Nissan CVTs it’s actually kinda good.

It soaks up bumps very nicely and is generally smooth and planted but there’s a bit more wind/tire noise than other cars in the segment, like say a Ford Focus.

We have successfully carried many large items with the seats flipped down. With the back seats up, my mother-in-law’s walker that looks kinda like this fits in the folded-up position:
