Kinja'd!!!

Just looking for now, until I get my CBT completed. The CB125F seems like a solid learner bike and has some very good financing which I prefer over spending a chunk of my savings. The local Yamaha dealer is closed tomorrow so I’ll be popping by next weekend to check out the YS125. Our licencing means the little 125 will stay with me for 2 years so I’d like something reliable. I’m open to suggestions if anyone has any.

Are you limited only in engine size or horsepower as well?

Horsepower. Has to be both 125cc or lower and under 11kW (about 14.5hp).

Why not buy a used beater which you can sell with very little loss once your license upgrade comes into effect?

The licence upgrade is over two years away and could be up to 3 or 4, but I have thought about this. Contrary to our silly car market, bikes hold their value extremely well. Averaging 5k a year for arguments sake, I’d look to lose about £1k in depreciation over 3 years based on current used prices. That’s fairly easy for me to stomach for the sake of warranty and having something I can depend on. Since I’m unexperienced I basically want ownership to be as easy as possible while I’m learning the ropes. For a similar bike sub £1000 I’d be looking at over 6 year old bikes with a fair few miles with questionable maintenance histories.

Stupid question, but how much exactly is one of these new?

Wouldn’t it make more sense to buy a used bike as your learner bike? ou’lll prob be upgrading quickly after you upgrade your license and it’s far cheaper?

It doesn’t work out hugely cheaper unless you go for something that’s in fairly poor condition. It takes a minimum of 2 years to get to a bigger bike too. Money isn’t hugely tight, this is replacing my E36 which was costing me £1000 a year in tax and insurance.

For a brand new vehicle with full warranty? That’s seriously cheap! I can understand that logic now.

This is why I’ve come around haha. Over the many years I’ve wanted to get back into bikes I’ve always looked at used stuff. But I’ve got a proper job now and the few hundred quid extra hit in depreciation a year (these are worth £1500-£2000 at 3 years old if cared for depending on miles) doesn’t seem so bad. I’ve put more into my piece of crap E36 this last year than the bike’s depreciation and running costs, put it that way.
