Break In Questions

I’m trying to break in the new FoST so I can get the 1000 mile oil change before SE Oppo meet and not have to worry about it. I’m progressively breaking in the car, babying it at first, getting on it a little more now, hitting lower boost more, etc. I have about 460 on it in a week, and I’m about to leave to drive to my parents house. That’s about 180 miles each way, straight highway. A lot of people don’t recommend highway cruising, so if I do take it, should I just modulate the rpms like I’ve already been doing while highway commuting? Or would it be a good idea to just take my old car? My feeling is as long as I can get to 1000-1100 and still have a few days before the meet I should be okay. Here’s another pic of the new whip for your time, because I love this thing.

I would think a steady economic driving on the highway would be perfectly suited to the break in. You could do a few pulls during the drive to fully engaged the turbo.

When you say the SE Oppo meet, you mean the one here in Nashville right?

If so I will most likely be there in my stage 3 2013 FoST. Nice to know some other FoST owners will be there too.

I was told not to drive the exact same speed for too long but as long as it’s not in cruise control I don’t think it’d be an issue. Normal highway driving your speed will vary by a few mph unless it’s ridiculously flat and straight near you.

I think a lot of this sort of thing is stuff your grandfather had to do to break in the ol’ Biscayne - modern engine management systems make sure you don’t lunch something. That said, there is nothing to be lost by driving it prudently for x100 miles before you drive it hard.

Actually, it’s from SW to NW Ohio, which is ridiculously flat and straight, lol. So I’ll have to be mindful of slowing a bit. I will heed your advice! I’m so used to driving but manuals without cruise that I’m not sure I’ll ever use it anyways

I’ve heard not to drive at a steady speed/rpm for too long, so a pull or two would probably help that!

Yeah, I’ll be at the Nashville meet. I vacationed there with my girlfriend a few months ago and loved it so I couldn’t pass it up. Not sure who’s all attending with what if they didn’t comment, but I know Jordan with the blue FiST on here will also be present. There will be a good ST crowd!

Modulate the RPMs a bit and you’ll be fine.

There is a lot of good info on focusst.org as well as many great deals on used parts

Engine break ins are sort of a combination of voodoo, black magic, and the force. There are as many different theories regarding break in as there are engines.

If Ford specifies a certain procedure, stick to that.

Mercedes doesn’t recommend anything in particular. AMG says no full throttle and don’t exceed 4000rpm for the first 1000km, but no oil change is necessary at that point. Ducati says not to exceed 6000rpm, no full throttle, and no constant rpm for the first 1000km, then change the oil. Some people say drive it like it’s going to be driven later. Some people say baby it. My personal recommendation is to drive it moderately and fluctuate the engine speed a little, nothing too crazy should be necessary.

I always LOL when people get nervous about break in.

Apparently some variation of speed and rpm is desirable when breaking a car in.

So from that basis, I say... take the new car on the highway trip, just don’t set the cruise control... and let your speed fluctuate a bit.

I did highway driving during break in of my FoST but later in the break in 800-900 time range and just went back and forth between 5th and 6th and speed +/- 10mph during the trip to vary RPM/throttle. It’s the constant RPM and throttle that is not wanted. Contstant speeds/throttle is ref here:  http://www.popularmechanics.com/cars/how-to/a3113/how-to-break-in-a-new-car/

Here is Cobb’s procedure for fully built engine:

Technical Articles

0-100 miles, run engine very lightly, no more that 1-2 psi boost, no more than 28% TPS and 3500 RPM, change engine oil and filter. Vary the engine RPM and decelerate the engine under vacuum as frequently as you accelerate the engine, you want your engine to break-in evenly.

100-500 miles, run engine very lightly, no more that 3-5 psi boost, no more than 40% TPS and 4500 RPM. Vary the engine RPM and decelerate the engine under vacuum as frequently as you accelerate the engine; down shift the vehicle to come to a stop rather than using just the brakes.

500-1000 miles, run engine more aggressively, no more that 6-8 psi boost, no more than 50% TPS and 5000 RPM. Change engine oil and filter.

I ended up taking the car and did something similar. My speed range changed a bit more (probably like 15-maybe 20ish) but it was also traffic/city dependent. I think I started the trip around 550ish miles and I’m up to 950 now. I’m going to take it to work tomorrow, do some spirited driving this weekend, and get the oil changed soon after. Thanks for the help!
