Kinja'd!!!

The Prius C. It’s small, practical, rock solid reliable, and good on fuel. Sure, the driving experience is a bit, shall I say, dull. But honestly, it’s a commuter car. Who gives a shit? It’s not trying to be anything it isn’t.

Kinja'd!!!

The interior is a nice place to be too. I’ve always liked how Toyota has the gauges in the centre of the car on a lot of their small cars and the Prius range. The gearstick though is a bit gaudy.

Kinja'd!!!

In general, I don’t understand the hate for the Prius. Sure, some of the drivers are twats. But I don’t think that’s the car’s fault. I hate Lexus RX350 drivers, but I quite like the RX350. Same applies for the Prius and it’s siblings. They are all very good, very sensible, commuter cars. Nothing more, nothing less. I think people need to stop thinking that every car has to be a performance car. Not everyone wants a sports car. Some people just want a car that will get them from A to B comfortably and efficiently, and that’s just fine.

You may jest, but the rozzers would never expect someone to use a Prius C as a getaway car.

I have a confession....that is the only model Prius I actually like and for the same reasons you stated....I still wouldn’t buy one....but I get it, for those that do.

2 friends have them. I’ve driven one. The interior is the hardest, creakiest piece of PLA-SKOOL grade plastic I’ve ever seen in a new car. It will not get out of its own way. I groans when you try to make it. Everything about it feels hollow and tinny.

I say this as a Buick Verano owner. My expectations aren’t exactly stratospheric. But there’s a reason CR hates it. And there’s a reason I’m extremely unimpressed.

I do, however, like the new regular Prius. That car has daring styling, a grear interior. an improved driving experience, and excellent fuel economy.

One of my coworkers got one of these after totaling a G35 and a C300 because he wanted something more difficult to speed in. Then about a year in the Prius C was totaled in an incident where it high-centered on a stump on a dirt road. He replaced it another Prius C. So on one hand they are easy to kill, but the point of this rambling is that owners of these cars love them. Any time a car is held in very high regard by its owners we should pay attention. It may not be a fun car, but it obviously has some qualities that make it worth owning. And we shouldn’t harbor hate for these kind of vehicles.

What’s not to like? The deplorable styling, they’re about as fun to drive as a forklift, and Toyota is obsessed with making the interior and controls so deliberately weird to try to show how “different” it is.

You know, you’re absolutely right.

I see lots of adverts for mind-numbingly dull little commuter cars that paint them as something ‘sporty’. Then, when someone new to cars drives one they must think ‘jesus cars must be dull if this is a sporty one’.

Should be sued for false advertising as they’re contributing to the death of the affordable sports car.

Welcome to the world of the enlightened enthusiast. You’ve realized nobody is impressed by your expansive knowledge of how obscure cars work, or that you can memorize horsepower numbers.

You’ve placed yourself outside of your regular view on cars and can appreciate what the masses do. You understand.

And you’re less of a jerk now for not being an “lol Priuses are stupid, hawhaw, my mustang eats priuses for breakfast” enthusiast, not to say you were before, but it’s been well over ten years now and people still make fun of the Prius. Pri are great at what they do, and therefore great cars.

I enjoy a fun commuter car. If I have to be driving I’d like it to be enjoyable. It can help relieve stress while teaveling to and from work.

I wonder if Toyota will bring the updates that the European-market 2017 Yaris Hybrid (and presumably the new Japanese-market Vitz Hybrid) got, to the Aqua and Prius c. They claim to have done various things to the engine mounts, driveshafts, subframe, airbox, and exhaust system to quiet down the engine. That’ll help with the groaning, at least.

Of course, on the 2016 Liftback and I believe the 2017 v, they actually went for increasing the amount of electric power used during acceleration to keep the engine RPMs down...

But, yeah, the problem with the Prius c is, ultimately, it’s a long wheelbase Yaris. That’s a cheap car, and it’s going to feel cheap... except neither the Yaris nor the Prius c are priced as that cheap cars. The cheapest Yaris hatch I could find in the country was $14,344, the cheapest Prius c I could find was $17,277.

Granted, I’d expect the Yaris or the Prius c to last better than some CVT-equipped Nissan or a Mitsubishi Mirage or something, but when you can find Mirages for under $8k, new... that buys a lot of repairs and gas (and the Mirage is more efficient than the Yaris).

Exactly this. Those things have their place in society, but I’ll do everything I can in avoiding having to drive one.

And no, it has nothing to do with its size or acceleration.

They advertise everything as ‘sporty’ nowadays. Even things that are as far from sporty as possible. Shameful really. What’s wrong with advertising something as ‘comfortable’ or anything like that? Illuminate its qualities, don’t try to turn it into something it’s not.

I personally never had any hate towards the Prius...until I saw the design of the latest regular Prius...that thing is hideous. Fortunately, something they solved with the sleek looking Prius Prime you posted above.

The C is another good example of a car that does exactly what it’s intended to do instead of looking or being advertised as being capable of more than what it is. Handsome design, too.

I just wish they called it the Aqua here, like they do in Japan. Much better name.

Every time I go to a Toyota dealer lot, there’s four things I always look at: the trucks, the 4Runner, the 86, and this.

Even the One trim versions are decently equipped, and it’s an attainable hybrid when you can get one for just over twenty grand. It does what Honda intended with the second generation Insight, but better.

If someone handed me the keys to one, I wouldn’t say no.

Unless, of course...it’s a Persona series model. What were they thinking?

Yeah i wosh ‘comfort’ was a big selling point again. Peugeot and Citroen would have cause to really champion the French way of motoring (less about getting there fast, more about being supremely comfortable as you waft there in style) :)
