Here's a good picture to show why convertibles are a bit floppy...

Kinja'd!!!

I ordered some door bars through blackbird fabworx, but we’re doing something custom so it could be awhile. I think I’ve accepted the fact that this car is going to end up pretty hardcore. Ideally I’ll find a bone stock yellow Miata to turn into a comfy, easy to handle car. That would be a good garage, right?

It’s a wonder that it all holds together.

Dear god man, you have the most legit wheels for a Miata, and the least legit steering wheel. You know the factory one is a Momo right?

In the meantime, have you tried the little door bumpers from FlyinMiata?

What, is it really? I had no idea. Still, the stock wheel is awful. Terrible feel in hand, ugly, and I wanted to ditch the 22 yo airbag asap.

The NRG... It’s cheap and I would never buy it again, but I’ll rate it slightly above stock. It was my first mod, when I told myself I’d take the wheel everywhere to prevent my car from being stolen. That lasted for a good month...

No, but seeing as mine are torn up that wouldn’t be a bad idea. I’ve heard good things

Yeah, if I were keeping the body of my car, I would do it. I’m currently 70/30 on building an Exocet. Would be 90/10 if I hadn’t drained so many funds replacing what amounts to the entire suspension.

You’re not helping my desire to turn the MR2 in a track rat. Perhaps I’ll just live vicariously though you, as mine would lose street legal status way too easily here.

My mate’s just put a hoop with door bars in his NA and it makes a hell of a difference. Jack one side and you can still open the doors no problem.

I would recommend a quick-release wheel though as it’s a real pain getting in and out of.

Here’s his :) coilovers and lip are new and they look damn good

I might be mistaken I the factory three spike wheel is a Momo but the big pillow airbag one probably isn’t. And the newer NB three spokes are made by Nardi. Also this is why NRG scares me. When it came to to buy an aftermarket wheel I bought a used Momo wheel because I couldn’t afford a new one, but didn’t want to go with an EBay brand.

You are correct, the 3-spoke steering wheels are MOMO items.

Fun fact, the NB steering wheels have the Nardi “ND” logo cast into the metal frame behind the airbag. The last of the Mazda Proteges, which use the exact same steering wheel design, minus the ND logo on the bottom spoke, doesn’t have the “ND” casting.

It’s a wonder that it all holds together.

Look up the Power Plant Frame on the Miata. It is essentially a girder that ties the transmission to the rear differential, and helps stiffen things a bit keeping the whole powertrain together. It is a cool idea that surprisingly more FR layouts don’t use (convertible or not).

Even with the PPF, there are a number of modifications that can help tighten up a Miata chassis and stiffen that section in the middle.
