I was driving back to work after lunch today and there was a work crew blocking the left lane, cutting down some trees in the median.I was in the left lane, so I got one lane over to the right about 1/4 mile before the crew. As I got close, they started cutting and a stream of what I thought was sawdust was coming out of their equipment into the next lane (the one I was in). I wasn’t able to change lanes in time but figured it was just sawdust, no big deal.

Turns out it was basically a damn hose spraying tree sap. So now I can’t see out of my windshield at all, and I’m in moderate traffic moving about 50mph. Not a happy situation. I start swearing, hit my windshield sprayers, and hold the switch down until I’m out of windshield fluid. Still can barely see, so I pull into a conveniently placed drive-thru car wash. It barely touches the sap, but at least now I can kind of see through my cloudy, streaky windshield.

I made it back to work and now I’m just fantasizing about encasing that work crew in amber like a Jurassic Park mosquito, and dreading cleaning sap off of my entire fucking car. What the actual hell.

That sucks. Rubbing alcohol might be your friend. That’s what I use for pine sap, works well without damaging the paint, so far as I can tell.

Alcohol will get it off the windows. Grab some hand sanitizer and go to town.

Might strip off any wax or sealant / dry out the clear coat. I think you’d be alright to use alcohol to remove the gunk and come back with a light wax if concerned.

I feel your pain after a poor parking decision I made a while ago. Stupid pines. Let me know if you find something that works.

Tree trimmer must be one of those jobs they give to people that score low on the common sense section of the job placement test. We had a few cutting behind the field at my son’s little league game and one of the trees landed on top of the dugout with the kids inside. The workers didn’t seem to think that was a problem (and cussed us out for trying to get them to stop) until one of the moms called the police in to better relate the gravity of the situation.

Goo-Gone or rubbing alcohol (90% if you can find it) two things that remove the stuff.

I’m reading there are a few options. Alcohol and Goo-Gone, as mentioned here, as well as hot water and dish soap apparently.

This is my beater so it could have been worse (I’m having trouble imagining how pissed I’d be if I had happened to be on my motorcycle) but I still like to keep my cars clean and looking decent. Their carelessness basically cost me several hours of my weekend.

.__.

Try Tarminator Tar and Bug remover. Readily found at most Autozone, Napa, Oreilleys. Should take it all off.

The tar and bug removers are basically diesel fuel. Alcohol is probably the best alternative, along with Goo Gone. Just make sure you put some wax back over the area, because it will be stripped.

Yeah, that’s definitely what pissed me off the most. They created a really dangerous situation out of sheer laziness/carelessness/ineptitude that could have ended with someone getting seriously hurt.

I’ll get over the sap; my car needed a good wash and wax anyway. But the fact that some people just casually do such dumb, dangerous shit is frustrating as all hell.

Ugh, had a Pine tree over a driveway once.. landlord decided to cut a few branches and it ended up dripping all summer on our cars.

Goo-Gone worked best, but still was a pain, keeping them waxed helped a ton too.. I eventually just parked on the street.

The city/whomever the employer is of the workers would be getting a phone call if that happened to me.

Good to know, thanks. I have a bottle of Goo-Gone so I’ll give that a shot first. The car needed a good wash and wax anyway, I guess.

Unfortunately I didn’t catch a company name before I passed, and after I passed I was concentrating on not dying, so I don’t know who was doing the work. I will be sending an email to the city to let them know what happened, but I don’t expect anything to actually come from it.

Rubbing alcohol for tree sap works best.
