Convince me that a Dodge Charger Scat Pack is a bad idea

Besides the terrible fuel economy, what is bad about a Dodge Charger Scat Pack for a DD. I’m not terribly interested in leather seats or the best infotainment but I would like the car to not fall apart around me.

Kinja'd!!!

Is it something I should lease instead?

My girlfriend’s dad bought a 2015 Wrangler new. He found out that they had botched the paint job, and the dealer refused to do anything about it. Within a year, the botched paint areas rusted.

Don’t do it. They don’t care before or after the sale. Which hurts to say because I love the Charger.

It’s a Chrysler product. Something will go wrong.

Also, you will officially be part of the mopar clan, so you will likely take up eating paint chips and you’ll start sending promiscuous messages to family members.

Joking aside, I’ve never met a mopar driver that wasn’t a jerk or painfully ignorant.

These are a great balance of style, comfort, power, and value. I would do it.

Chrysler quality brought down by Fiat quality. A lease might even be a sketchy proposition.

The guy I bought one of my cars from had a Challenger that was a couple years old that he couldn’t drive because it was broken again... Claimed it was the least reliable car he ever owned, and he was well into his 50s, which gave me pause when I thought of the malaise cars he must have driven.

It’s depressing because I always love Charger and 300 rentals. Comfortable RWD full-size cars are great for road trips.

I put 30k on a Charger with no issues at all. Mine only had the 5.7, but I never hear of issues with the 6.4. Last I checked, it’s possible to get a scat pack with cloth or suede and leather. No full leather seats.

The name has both “Cry” and “Scat” in it. It’s a sign.

Lease a Whorevette instead.

I haven’t the slightest clue. I can’t remember what he was saying about them missing, he just showed me the rust spots.

Dodge/Chrysler/Fiat get a lot of shit on here, sometimes deservedly so. But, as long as you go into it knowing what to expect quality wise I don’t see why not. Maybe leasing is a better option given the quality reputation. That being said my good friends mom drives a 2015 AWD Charger, loves it and has not had any issues with it *knocks on wood with sledgehammer*

Just reading up about it now since you piqued my interest, some Jeep owners are saying that it’s most likely metal in the air from transport that landed on the paint and then rusted. I can’t remember how bad it is, but that could be the cause.

However, the fact that the dealer did nothing about it makes me more worried than the rust itself.

First Don’t Ever Buy an FCA product. Lease them. Second Chrysler’s Leasing sucks compared to Ford. Drive a SHO, better in the winter, if that’s a thing where you live. Not as outright fast as a Scat Pack Charger, but a nicer car to be in.

What I would ask is why a new/newer one? If a charger does it for you, why not pick up an old one. 7-1o year old chargers with V8's are a dime a dozen for about 10 grand with not unreasonable mileage. Not much has really changed on them.

Yup. I’ve always had the strong impression that the Dodge muscle cars have the worst of the sports/muscle car stigmas. There’s just something extra unsavory about the Mopar folks.

I had a Charger RT for a few years. I loved it, but it developed an electrical issue and I had to sell it. Loved the car’s driving dynamics though. Great engine, I liked the driving dynamics, etc. I would buy the extended warranty if I bought another one. Great motors in those cars.

I have a feeling you’re going to have to explain to a lot non-car friends and family why it’s called the scat pack and why it has nothing to do with feces.

I’m seriously considering getting a Challenger for my next car (scat pack would be nice, but I only really want the shaker scoop and a V8).

Granted, I’m not overly worried about driving an “unreliable” car, I’ve had to fix things on nearly every car I’ve owned, so how can a Dodge be that different?

The lease deals on these seem to good to be true. They’ve been on my radar the last few weeks. The 392 Daytona has it all except a manual.

Its a Chrysler product It invariable will, I remember renting a 2016 Charger SE with 5000 miles, and the center console trim around the stereo came away in my hand, the volume down button behind the steering wheel would not work..

I would like the car to not fall apart around me.

And yet here you want an FCA product. Seems like those are a bit contradictory.

You can find a lot of gently used ones (20k miles or less) for around $35k. Make sure you look at MY15's and up because the 14's didn’t have the magnetic ride shocks.

If you like the Genesis and want a V8, get the earlier version.

The Genesis 5.0 R Spec are going for peanuts!

“I would like the car to not fall apart around me.” So basically you shouldn’t be looking at a Chrysler product.

The only real downside that I can think of is, no manual.

Seems that talking bad about FCA reliability is the in thing to do.

Fiat’s suck for reliability. Pretty much a given.

The 300/Charger/Challenger series seem to have had decent reliability, especially the later models.

I know quite a few people with these cars (all 2009 or later) and not one of them has had serious issues with their cars. The biggest issue that I hear about is the stupid automatic in the latest model cars and how it doesn’t show you what your selection is.

Go for it and enjoy the hell out of the car.

It’s a huge gamble with a Chrysler product, that’s why you’d wanna lease. Transmission issues, electrical issues, poor build quality, etc. We’ve had three modern Chrysler products in my immediate family; never again. My mother in law swears by Jeep, even though hers have constant problems. It makes me want to pull my hair out that she sticks with them. Why keep putting your hand on the hot stove and continue to get burned?

Sure, you’ll have people claiming they’ve owned Chrysler products that never gave them any problems over so many years, and they may be telling the truth, but they are absolutely the exception to the rule.

Just like Toyota builds the occasional lemon, Chrysler builds the occasional trouble-free car. Again, it’s just such a gamble with that company.

About the only car you can rely on from FCA is a Viper. Besides the laughable interiors of the first four generations, they’re actually as reliable as an anvil. But the team that builds them also isn’t your typical group of drunk, high, and/or lazy assembly line workers.

It’s funny: As much as I despise Chrysler and nearly everything they churn out, the Viper is one of my favorite cars, and one I would absolutely spend my money on. But again, it isn’t your typical Chrysler product built by your typical Chrysler employee.
